Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

The Bow Tie Challenge continues.  Club Member Craig Knobloch has thrown down the gauntlet!  After realizing his initial idea for a beard growing contest was perhaps unfair to the women in the club, the ever dapper Craig is throwing down a bow tie challenge to the club.  If you own a bow tie, wear it to this next or an upcoming meeting.  He will contribute $1 for every member to the club.  The real challenge may be if you know how to tie it!  Only two members rose up to the challenge last week.

Holiday Cheese Sale.  Tom Plechaty has several cheese packages available for sale, a great gift for the Holidays.  See Tom at a meeting, or contact him to make arrangement.  Last year, the club made almost $1500 on this fundraiser!

The Opening Act

Club President, Zach Edwards, called the meeting to order.  Jonathan Turner once again provided the entertainment, accompanied by Liz Loveless.

Zach's first message was to inform us that the first load of Dining Tour books has already been sold but that more would be spinning off the presses.

Tom Plechaty gave another reminder as the Club Cheese Wiz.

For the benefit of the Grants Committee, Zach reminded that group that they would be meeting next Monday afternoon at the conclusion of the Club meeting.

Gene Smith gave a report on Birdies for Charity, announcing that the Club benefitted to the tune of $3,327 this year.  There are a few dollars that have not yet found their way into Gene's registry, and his enforcement team will be out on the streets shortly.

Zach next informed us that those who might have wished to have the outline of the program given by Mike Bell last week could obtain it from the Club.

We received another reminder that November 25 will be Invite a Guest Day.

One of our guests included a representative of the Rock Island Library, introduced to the Club by Marla Andich.  The occasion was to participate in the annual Food for Thought fundraiser at the Library.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, and Jud Briggs managed to lose the grand prize.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Coach Pat Rangel of Alleman High School.  A very appropriate and inspiring introduction was given by Father Mirabelli.  Coach Rangel related that this is his third year as a coach and that he has had a personal aspiration to address the matter of youth development in each presentation he gives.  His observation is simply that there are far too many games and not enough time taken to seize the opportunity for development at practice by young basketball players.  His philosophy is that coaches must be teachers foremost.  As for Alleman, he indicated that the team is very enthusiastic but inexperienced and, as is often the case, is short in numbers until the football playoffs conclude.
