Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

Holiday Cheese Sale.  Tom Plechaty has several cheese packages available for sale, a great gift for the Holidays.  See Tom at a meeting, or contact him to make arrangement.  Last year, the club made almost $1500 on this fundraiser!

The Opening Act

President Zach Edwards called the meeting of October 21 to order.  Also providing the entertainment was Jonathan Turner and his Kiwanis Band of Renown.

As is more often the case, Daryl Empen led the group in one of his favorite songs which he frequently enjoys singing, "Let It Snow", particularly, when he knows the lyrics.        We were informed that cheese sales would begin next week and that in the meantime, our own Cheese Wiz, Tom Plechaty, is going to be expanding cheese sales to those who are not members of either our Club or the Rock Island Rotary Club.

Dining Club books are on their way and will soon be making their appearance at our meetings.

Statements are available, so if you would be so kind as to pick yours up at the next meeting, it would be appreciated.

On November 25, there will be a special program given by Mark Amacher, at which time, he will share remembrances of the Kennedy Assassination.

Guests included representatives of the Alleman High School Key Club and the Jordan Builders Club.

In Fun and Fellowship, Dale Blocklinger won the preliminary prize, which he was pleased to get, particularly, if his winnings can actually be given to him.  Apparently, he ran into the same problem last week when the group congratulated him for winning, but somehow, the cash managed to become missing.  Les Bohnert won the grand prize.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by FBI Agent Steffens.  He began by giving a brief narrative on his past and has served this general area since 2005.  He is fast approaching the end of his 20 years in service.  He described his function as prevention of threats, particularly, of the nuclear, biological, and chemical variety.  He identified Al Qaeda as the chief threat to the American citizenry.  The business model of this organization is to find susceptible, potential agents, train them, and send them off to accomplish their mission.  Steffens explained that since 9/11, the emphasis has been drawn more toward recruiting and training individuals in the United States instead of taking them to foreign countries for this function.  The FBI has found that the major tool in recruitment includes using the Internet to disseminate the English language magazines, particularly, one called "Inspire".  The accessibility of the Internet has facilitated the dissemination of this literature.
