The Opening Act

Our newly-christened Club President, Zach Edwards, called his first official meeting to order October 7.  Jonathan Turner provided the entertainment, along with his Hail to the Chief Chorus.

Our first report was from Joe Robb, who reported on a successful and enjoyable golf outing involving our Club and the Moline Club.  A good time was had by all and, apparently, they brought along enough AA batteries for their flashlights once they finally got done.

Guests included a prospective member brought to the meeting by Marla Andich.

Happy Dollars included a number of special items, including recognition of the celebration of Jim Horstmann's 80th birthday, Dale Grabau's 85th birthday, an announcement by past President, Queen Daphne, who informed us that Bud Helpenstell has moved out to Oregon, and Steve Pressly, celebrating his 36th anniversary as a member of the Club, having been invited to Kiwanis by Tom Hanson.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize but, for the grand prize, the group managed to lose.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Brian Hollenback of Rock Island Economic Growth Corporation.  Brian gave a brief history of the organization and noted that it was the Rock Island business community which laid the groundwork for his organization.  With a slide presentation, Brian explained how there are four sub-organizations involving Growth, Renaissance Rock Island, the District, and DARI.  Growth is primarily involved in housing development in rehabbing and building.  Renaissance is more focused on downtown housing renovation, resale or rent.  Brian explained that the current doctrine is that the market in real estate focuses more on jobs than on location.  The areas in which the organization has met with significant success are the 11th Street corridor, the Old Chicago neighborhood, the Arsenal Gateway and Central neighborhood, College Hill, Keystone, the Trinity area, and downtown Rock Island.  He then gave an extensive and well-articulated summary of how funding works with the organization, how funds are made available, and how the funds are utilized.

PHRASE FOR THE DAY
