Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

The 5th Annual Kiwanis-Pepsi Bags Tournament is around the corner, September 21st at Schwiebert Park.  Volunteers are needed in many areas.  This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and is critical to our ability to fund grants for the coming year.  We need all hands on board.  Please contact Kim Brozovich, our volunteer coordinator this year, if you can assist in any way.  Her email is kbrozovich@ihmvcu.org.

Also, please get the word out about the tournament.  Teams are still needed to make this a success.  Get teams from your workplace, participate yourself, share on Facebook, Tweet, and do everything you can to spread the word!!

The Opening Act

Club President, Jeff Behrens, called the meeting of September 9 to order.  Providing the entertainment again was Jonathan Turner and the Rock Island Kiwanis Pops Orchestra.

Jeff provided us with several announcements.  First, the request was made for volunteers for the soon-to-be world famous bags tournament September 21.  If you know a few folks who have a competitive, athletic spirit, there is still room for teams to register.

By the time you get this newsletter, you will have managed to miss the Tuesday, September 10 Board meeting at Huckleberry's.

Liz Loveless reminded us of the NAMI Walk on September 28 at Schwiebert Park at 10:00 a.m.  Money for pledges must be in Liz's hands by September 23.

In the world of Interclubs, Steve Schroder reminded us of the widely-acclaimed rolle bolle fest in Atkinson Wednesday, September 11.

In Fun and Fellowship, Les Bohnert won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the Club.  Dick Timmer qualified for the grand prize and while he got past the first qualifying round, Zach Edwards managed to deny him the grand prize.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Mark Drake of the Youth Hope Ministry of Christian Friendliness.  Mark began with a brief background on the formation of the organization in 1936 by Agnes Teske of Moline.  The group began by addressing the needs of the basic necessities which so many of the poor population didn't have.  The organization has grown significantly in its efforts toward outreach to the community, providing youth centers in which young people can occupy their free time, and Camp Summit, a camp near New Windsor which the organization acquired from the Girl Scouts.

PHRASE FOR THE DAY
