Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

The State Class C softball tournament is August 9-11, and we need help running the beer tent and gate.  If you are available, please reply to this newsletter, and we will get you opening that we need assistance with.

Kiwanis Night at the River Bandits August 12th.  All area Kiwanis clubs will be recognized for all we do for the community.  Tickets are $6 per person.  If interested in attending, please reply to this email, and we will arrange for tickets.

The Opening Act

Club President, Jeff Behrens, called the meeting of July 29 to order.  Jonathan Turner provided the entertainment for the meeting along with that crowd favorite, Bix Empen.

During the meal, the notorious back corner table enjoyed the tutorial provided by Prof. Duncan Reid, who regaled us on some of his Phavorite Pharm Phrases.

By the time you get this newsletter, you will have missed the opportunity to attend an Interclub in Moline on July 30 over the noon hour at Trinity Lutheran Church at 1330 - 13th Street.  The next Interclub gathering will be Monday, August 5 in Annawan.

Tom Plechaty again gave his plea for assistance at our annual softball tournament, especially at the gate.  Delivery service of yeast beverages is available, so figure that gate workers will be the only people able to enjoy the shade if it gets really hot that weekend.

President Jeff once again gave the call for potential Hixson nominees.

There is to be a Kiwanis Night with the River Bandits on August 12.  Seats will be $6.  Contact Daryl if you're interested.

Bob VanDeVoorde announced that he had muscled $56 for the Food Pantry.

In Fun and Fellowship, Les Bohnert won the preliminary prize, which he graciously donated back to the Club.  Dick Timmer won the opportunity to go for the grand prize, and while he gave his best effort at trying to continue until he reached the amount he could donate back to the Club, he still managed to win.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Beth Carvey of the Blackhawk State Historic Site.  Beth gave an excellent presentation, beginning with the history of the area, as well as the site.  From 1882 until 1925, the site was used primarily as an amusement park.  It had been developed through the extension of a rail line from downtown Rock Island.  In 1927, it was acclaimed an historic site.  Beth continued with a history of the major buildings on the site, culminating in the CCC construction of the building presently standing on the site, which was completed in 1942.  The Blackhawk statute was moved to the site from downtown Rock Island in 1955.  The museum dates back to the 1930s, but it was in 1975 that the museum was outfitted as it currently stands.  This beautiful park offers six miles of hiking trails and over 200 acres of parkland.
