Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

Kiwanis Night at the River Bandits August 12th.  All area Kiwanis clubs will be recognized for all we do for the community.  Tickets are $6 per person.  If interested in attending, please reply to this email, and we will arrange for tickets.

The Opening Act

Club President, Jeff Behrens, called the meeting of July 8 to order.  Maestro Jonathan Turner was absent and, in his place, we enjoyed the musical entertainment of Daryl Empen and the Badger Chorus.

The first announcement concerned Birdies for Charity.  Gene Smith informed the group that participation has already exceeded the goal that had been set.  Gene, of course, reminded us that is no excuse not to follow through on participating if you have not yet done so.

President Jeff informed us that those who had purchased cases of peanuts could continue to pick them up on making arrangements with the House Committee.

The Legion of Honor recognition will be presented at an upcoming meeting.

Tom Plechaty gave us the first call for the slow-pitch softball tournament to be held August 9 - 11.  This is always a fun event and provides an excellent opportunity for fellowship.

Please contact a Club officer or Board member if you have a person in mind for the Hixson Award.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, and Paul Lamourex lost out on the grand prize in probably one of the most unbelievable upsets imaginable.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Barb Melbourne, Vice President for Development with the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend.  The Community Foundation is the provider of administrative support for the Amy Helpenstell Foundation.  Barb began her presentation by giving some background on Amy, a loved former member of the Club, as well as the Huesing bottling operation.  Barb continued by giving some background on the Board and the Board's giving model of employing the method of distribution by invitation.  Currently, the focus of the Foundation is to focus on the core mission of the beneficiary.

Upcoming Programs

July 22nd       Rock Island Arsenal

July 29th        Beth Carvey, Black Hawk Historical Society
