Upcoming Events/Fundraisers/Dates

We have selected Friday and Saturday, June 21-22 for our annual Peanut Day fundraiser.  We will have signup sheets at upcoming meetings, and also pre-sale signup sheets for those members who wish to purchase a case of peanuts to help the Kiwanis cause.  We will be selling at the Rock Island HyVee from 10-5 each day, and have 2 hour shifts to sign up for.  Please step up to the plate and help the club with our fundraising, and also being a visible presence in the community!

The Opening Act

Officers from the Alleman High School Key Club presided over the Club meeting of May 13.  Jonathan Turner again provided the entertainment, along with his Pioneer Chorus.

Club President, Jeff Behrens, gave a number of presentations and comments.  First, Jeff recognized Don Adams, the faculty advisor of the Key Club and a close friend of the Kiwanis Club of Rock Island.

Jeff next informed the group that by the time you receive this newsletter, you will have had an opportunity to miss the meeting of the Satellite Club at Legends at 5:30 on May 14.

Also on the "too late" list is the Board meeting at 11:30 on May 14 at Huckleberry's.

The Grants Committee met on May 13, so we should expect to receive some news and recommendations from that group shortly.

Gene Smith again exercised commendable cheerfulness in distributing a few more Birdies for Charity pledge cards.  So far as the nice goes, we all know that Gene's happy passing out the cards, but when the cards don't come back, well, not so much.

The next Interclub will be May 28 with the Bettendorf Club.  Contact Tom Hanson or Steve Schroder if you'd be interested in joining the group.

Guests included an Interclub from Geneseo, as well as a number of members and officers of the Alleman High School Key Club.  Jeff commended Tom Stontz for his work as Club liaison to the Alleman High School Key Club.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize.  The Kartel also won the opportunity to go for the grand prize but managed to lose out.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Cathy O'Keefe of  "Breaking Traffick".  Cathy gave a very informative and interesting presentation on the activities of the group in the interest of stopping sexual and labor exploitation in the Quad Cities.  Among the number of frequently-asked questions, we learned that the average age of children who fall victim to sex trafficking is 11 - 14 years and that one in three runway youth are approached for commercial sex within 48 hours of being on the street.  Each year in the United States, an estimated 100,000 - 300,000 American children are at risk of falling victim to sex trafficking.  Cathy gave some background on the organization and explained the purposes of the group for spreading awareness, providing legislative advocacy, and forming community partnerships.
