The Opening Act

Club President, Jeff Behrens, called the meeting of February 25 to order.  Once again providing the entertainment was Jonathan Turner and his Little Oscars.

Chris Elsberg drew our attention to the Club's current activities schedule, which includes egg stuffing for the Park District March 18, the egg hunt on March 23, Augustana's Circle K Club dance marathon on April 6, and the District Bowl-A-Thon April 7.

Jeff informed us that there would be a passing of the hat through the membership for the benefit of The Place 2B project which the satellite Club has taken on.

Tom Plechaty exhorted those who had not yet paid for pancake tickets to do so as soon as possible.

Liz Loveless reminded us of the Bowl-A-Thon again and asked if we could make our contributions to the Bowl-A-Thon in a manner which would not require Liz to have to hire Gene Smith's enforcer crowd to collect on pledges.

Jeff announced that there would be a Bylaws Committee meeting after next week's Club meeting.

Guests included members of the Rock Island High School Key Club.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize.  Gene Smith qualified to go for the grand prize but Zach Edwards managed to keep the money in house.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Leslie Cox, a representative of the Diabetes Foundation.  She began by giving some background statistics on diabetes.  Overall, the disease is increasing and has currently increased to the extent that there are 79 million people who are at risk.  She informed us that diabetes can be prevented or at least delayed.  The age at which individuals should begin to assume checkups would be once an individual hits age 40.  A sizable portion of the population may have diabetes and may not know of it.  Other markers for the disease include women having waists larger than 36 inches and men with waists larger than 40 inches.  She recommended that people get at least 150 minutes of exercise a week.  Elevated blood sugar is another marker.  Statistics show that Caucasians tend to have less of a likelihood of developing diabetes.  Much of the demonstration of the disease is found in genetics.  She recommended that intelligent action to be taken would include eating smart, watching portions, and eating certain types of food.  Diabetes is often a precursor of other problems, such as heart disease.
