| The Opening Act | |
Club President, Jeff Behrens, called our first meeting of 2013 to order. This special event included the "State of the City" address by Mayor Dennis Pauley of Rock Island. We served as hosts while conducting a shared meeting with Rock Island Rotary Club on Tuesday, January 8, its regular meeting date.
Jeff gave several announcements. First, we were formally informed of the death of longtime Club member and civic leader, Rev. Ron Quay.
The Club will be sponsoring another Pancake Day on January 17.
The annual Governor's visit will be January 26. Our Club will be serving as hosts for that.
The winner of the first snowfall contest was none other than Mayor Pauley's predecessor and longtime Kiwanian, Mark Schwiebert.
The total amount of cheese sales was approximately $2,600. Tom Plechaty was again commended for his hard work on this project.
Kiwanis Club announcements were followed by Rotary announcements, which included reference to our January 23 outing with Rotary at Circa.

The Feature Attraction
| |
The program consisted of the "State of the City" address by Mayor Dennis Pauley. He began by acknowledging members of the Rock Island City Council, several of whom were in the audience. He also cited a number of retirees who carried with them over 60 years of dedicated and loyal service to the City. Mayor Pauley next made mention of new developments, including the Fareway grocery store and a new Wal-Mart on 11th Street. He also cited the expansion and remodeling taking place at a number of sites in the City, including Augustana, Crawford Heating, Langman Construction, Jordan Schools, and Metrolink.
Mayor Pauley also cited, with pride, the energy of the City in demolition of abandoned buildings and overall neighborhood stabilization. He stated that the City is in a strong financial position, that crime is down, and that the Park District is engaged in an ambitious expansion of the park system.
