Coats for Kids, Wednesday, November 14th.

King Center Thanksgiving Dinner, Sunday, November 18th

Salvation Army bell ringing, Friday, November 30

King Center Christmas party, featuring shopping December 6, wrapping December 15, and the party  on December 19.

The Opening Act

Club President, Jeff Behrens, called the meeting of October 29 to order.  Providing the entertainment again was Jonathan Turner with some special music highlighting the observance of a bank holiday in Ireland.

Adam Bain started off the announcements by saying that he and Heidi Huiskamp-Collins will be handling the Coats for Kids project this year.  The participating merchant this year will be the Old Navy store at NorthPark.  There will be 50 children from three different Rock Island Schools, who will be bused to the location.  This event will be occurring Wednesday, November 14.

To the exuberant delight of the crowd, Tom Plechaty announced that, once again, he would be our own Club Cheese Whiz.  Tom explained that this year, cheese packages will be available for Thanksgiving delivery, as well as all of the December holidays.

Chris Elsberg drew our attention to the current activity calendar which listed not only the Coats for Kids project, but the King Center Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday, November 18; the Salvation Army bell ringing Friday, November 30; and the King Center Christmas party, featuring shopping December 6, wrapping December 15, and the party  on December 19.  There will be more on all these points.

President Jeff told us that the invoices were out and available for pickup.

Dining Tour books are still available in the paperback or leatherette with gold-embossed covers.  The leatherette design is available at the low, low price of $35 and is suitable for personal use, gifts, or swatting at flies like President Jeff, who keeps his in his glove compartment.

Guests included representatives of the Rock Island High School Key Club.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize of $4, which it gobbled up to offset the day's $9 investment.  The Kartel also won the opportunity for the grand prize, but once again, it slipped through their hands.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by a representative of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Valley.  She began by giving a brief personal background.  She is originally from Ecuador and is fluent in English, French and Spanish.  She attended Syracuse University.  She explained that research has determined that the most dangerous time of the day for a young, unsupervised student is immediately after school.  The Clubs in Moline and Davenport provide an excellent alternative opportunity.  Club members are between six and 18 years old.  Over 180 youth per day are served in the Moline and Davenport locations.  While the cost of the membership fee is only $12 per year, the organization has computed that it costs approximately $1,000 to provide to a Club member what is offered.  This features free dinner and snacks for Club members, homework help, sports and recreation, and care during citizenship building.  The teen center is scheduled to open in January 2013 and will feature internship opportunities in computer labs, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, gym and recreational sports.
