October 20 deadline for 1st quarter grant requests

The Opening Act

President Jeff Behrens called the meeting of October 15 to order.  Jonathan Turner once again provided the entertainment, along with his Ides of October Bell Choir.

The first announcement came from immediate Past President, Tom Ketelaar, who stated that he would be making arrangements for Kiwanis directory pictures to be made for those who had joined the Club since the last time the directory was published and for those who wished to present themselves somewhat differently from the last go-around.  Contact Tom for this.

President Jeff next explained that there were two committees which are going to be reformed and revitalized, a Peanut Day Committee and a Spiritual Aims Committee.

The next announcements came from John Califf.  He reminded us again that the deadline for grant submittals would be October 22 and that the Grant Committee would be meeting to make its decisions on October 29.

In Fun and Fellowship, the Kartel won the preliminary prize, but in its enthusiasm to go for the grand prize, the team lost and John Califf came up with a game on the spur of the moment that was so contrived, it would probably make Mike Bell cry.

The last announcement was that on October 17, the new satellite group would be meeting at 5:30 at Bent River.  As a challenge, your Editor would propose that someone come up with a better name than satellite group.

The Feature Attraction

The program was given by Mr. John Snow, a representative from the Karpeles Manuscript Library.  The museum opened on October 1 after considerable renovation.  Dr. Karpeles began his museum work in 1983, and there are now 12 museums across the country.  The museum in Rock Island is the fourth in the Midwest and one of the largest buildings in the Karpeles network.  The objective of the museum is to encourage the arts and literature.  John gave some background on Dr. Karpeles in that he deals in historic manuscripts.  The first museum he opened was in Santa Barbara, California, where he still resides.  Dr. Karpeles has developed a preference for opening museums in smaller towns where the displays in the museum can be more significant with more exposure.  Current manuscripts being featured are those relating to Mark Twain, both manuscripts by Twain, about Twain, and reproductions thereof.  John explained that as renovation continues in the former First Church of Christ Scientist building, there will be more access for public events, presentations, lectures, concerts, and additional display space.  Displays are currently limited to the lobby area.  John explained that the museum has already commenced an outreach program with various schools in the Quad Cities area.  The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:00 to 4:00 and admission is free.
