Meet the Speakers: AFA Concepts in Care Conference, Washington, D.C.

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America is bringing its Concepts in Care educational conference to our nation's capital on Thursday, October 1, from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The conference will be held at the Frederick Douglass Museum & Caring Hall of Fame, 320 A Street NE in Washington, D.C.
This free conference will include a variety of noteworthy speakers, as well as a display of the AFA Quilt to Remember and free, confidential memory screenings administered by qualified healthcare professionals. Speakers include:

Dale Matthews, M.D., F.A.C.P.
|
Dale Matthews, M.D., F.A.C.P., of the Virginia Hospital Center's Physician Group, will speak about the role of spirituality and religion in caregiving. Dr. Matthews practices and teaches general internal medicine with an emphasis on individualized, patient-centered, and spiritually-sensitive treatment. He is a graduate of Princeton University (Romance Languages, cum laude) and Duke University School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Connecticut and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar Program at Yale University, a prestigious fellowship training program in clinical epidemiology and research. He has taught general internal medicine at Yale University, University of Connecticut, and Georgetown University.

Sandra Edmonds Crewe, Ph.D.
|
Sandra Edmonds Crewe, Ph.D., a seasoned administrator and expert on aging and quality of life issues, is dean of the Howard University School of Social Work. She will lead a panel of intergenerational family caregivers, who will share stories of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Crewe holds a B.S.W. and a M.S.W. from the National Catholic School of Social Services, Catholic University of America. She earned her Ph.D. in social work from Howard University and is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW). Her research interests include family caregiving and kinship care (emphasis on older adults), program development and evaluation, and cultural competence. She has published articles in the "Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment," "Affilia" and the "Journal of Health and Social Policy." She serves as director of the Multidisciplinary Center for Social Gerontology.
Stephanie Chong, director of community outreach & education at Lifematters, a company that provides comprehensive home care services, will present on early-onset Alzheimer's disease and what happens "When Dementia Strikes Early." Chong is a licensed social worker and a certified advanced social work case manager. Previously, she served as director of a nonprofit geriatric care management program, and in addition to working in multiple levels of care in senior living, she has had the unique experience of starting up a new assisted living and dementia care neighborhood. She volunteers for the Arlington Neighborhood Village and is on the Health and Wellness Committee for the Dupont Circle Village. Chong earned her Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Stockton University and a Master's degree in Social Work from Fordham University.
Chief Gene Saunders, founder and chief executive officer of Project Lifesaver International and chief of search and rescue at the Chesapeake Sherriff's, will educate attendees on how to prevent wandering in loved ones with Alzheimer's disease. He will also provide a demonstration of Project Lifesaver's technology-a wrist or ankle bracelet that emits its own unique radio tracking signal-that has helped Project Lifesaver member agencies achieve an impressive average rescue time of less than 30 minutes. AFA's New Training Video Approved for Continuing Education Contact Hours for Licensed Social Workers
We are thrilled to share the news that "AFA Partners in Care: Supporting Individuals Living With Dementia" has been approved by the National Association of Social Workers for 5.5 social work--pain and symptom management continuing education contact hours.
In addition, the program has been recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers (L.M.S.W.s and L.C.S.W.s).

Register Now - Fall Support Groups

This fall, AFA is kicking off two new caregiver support groups:
"Cuidado de Familia - Salud Cerebral" is a free, phone-based Spanish-language support group for caregivers who have questions or concerns about a loved one's brain health. The four-week group will take place Wednesdays, beginning October 7, from 3-4 p.m. EDT.
"Long-Distance Caregiving" is a free, phone-based support group designed to help long-distance caregivers navigate their role. This four-week group begins November 3, and will take place on subsequent Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m. EST.
Each group is facilitated by one of AFA's licensed social workers.
