Alzheimer's Foundation and Rite Aid Team for Nationwide Memory Screening Event

Collaboration Builds on AFA's National Memory Screening Day

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA)and Rite Aid collaborated on June 4  to offer free, confidential memory screenings at all Rite Aid stores, as part of the chain's monthly wellness65+ Wednesday event for seniors.

Pharmacists at all Rite Aid stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia administered the paper screenings. The wellness65+ event is designed to help seniors better enjoy their everyday life by proactively managing their health.

"Rite Aid provided an invaluable service by offering memory screenings in convenient neighborhood locations," said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA's chief executive officer. "Its participation sends the message that it's OK for people to talk about memory concerns and to be proactive about brain health."

The collaboration is part of AFA's new initiative, Community Memory Screening and Awareness-Raising Education (AFA C.A.R.E.S.). AFA C.A.R.E.S. builds on AFA's successful National Memory Screening Day by expanding the availability of free, confidential memory screenings from one designated date to various times throughout the year at community sites across the country.

Dementia Care Model Wins Government Innovation Grant

Grant Will Fund 'Care Ecosystem'

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) Innovation Center has awarded a $10 million grant to Regents of the University of California San Francisco as part of round two of its Health Care Innovation Awards.

Regents will use the funding to implement Care Ecosystem, a model that emphasizes continuous and personalized dementia care, and aims to improve satisfaction with care, prevent emergency-related health care costs, and enable individuals to remain in the home longer.

The primary point of contact for individuals and families will be a Care Team Navigator (CTN) with 24/7 availability. An innovative "dashboard" with both CTN and patient portals will drive efficient and personalized communication between the CTN, care team, and the person with dementia and family.

High Blood Pressure in Middle Age May Affect Memory Later in Life

A study of more than 4,000 older adults free of dementia found that a person's history of high blood pressure may  impact brain structure, memory and thinking. Those who currently have high blood pressure but no history  of the condition in middle age and those with  low blood pressure and a history of high blood pressure are at increased risk for brain shrinking and cognition problems. Lifestyle and Health Factors Impact Memory in Young Adults

According to a new study, the relationship between modifiable lifestyle and health factors and risk of subjective memory impairment (SMI) occurs in a broad range of ages. After interviewing 18,000 people aged 18-99, researchers found that depression, lack of exercise, high blood pressure, and lower levels of education were significantly linked to SMI across all age groups. Frequency of memory issues increased with age and number of risk factors. Gary W. Small, M.D., a member of AFA's Medical and Scientific Advisory Board, was senior author of the study. Read more.

Your Presence Is Our Gift

You may be aware that summer is peak wedding season, but did you know many couples are opting to make charitable donations on their guests' behalf in lieu of wedding favors? Or, how about requesting that guests make a donation to a favorite charity instead of giving a gift?  These are just a couple of ways that couples can kick off the next phase of their lives on a giving note.
