Blackhorse Association E-News - March 2016

Trooper Down
Patrick G. McPhetrige. Patrick passed away on December 16, 2015; his heart gave out at age of 66. He was with the Blackhorse in Vietnam 1969 -1970 and was proud to have served. When his daughter Sarah interviewed Patrick for a school project and a question was asked if he "would do it again?" - his answer was YES, even though Patrick was badly affected by Agent Orange. He was buried in the Alabama National Cemetery. Sandy, his wife of 44 years, misses him greatly.

Update on our Website

Greg Hallmark, our webmaster, has spent a few months upgrading the electronic newsletters portion of our website. We are pleased to announce that we have a new, permanent, archived area on the Blackhorse Association website. On those pages, you will find several years' worth of archived news stories about our Association and The Blackhorse Regiment. This section should be of benefit to future historians, association members, and anyone who is interested in the history of our Association and the Regiment. Here is a link to the archives: http://www.blackhorse.org/news.cfm.

A Request for Help with a Worthwhile Project

The Archive of Modern American Warfare (AMAW) is located at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. AMAW is currently building its collections following the proven procedures of the Vietnam Center and Archive. The mandate of the new Archive is to collect and preserve records documenting America's involvement in military actions after 1975, such as Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm; Operations Provide Relief and Restore Hope; the Kosovo War; Operation Iraqi Freedom; and Operation Enduring Freedom. It will encompass issues regarding national security; military and government intelligence; homeland defense; the development of new military technologies; diplomacy; and the personal experiences of American servicemen and women.

While the Archive accepts traditional archival material (such as correspondence, artifacts, analog photographs, and videos), we are particularly interested in collecting digital material such as digital photographs, digital videos, emails, text messages, and word processing documents. These materials are of vital importance to us because digital materials are more susceptible to deterioration over time than are paper records, yet both are equally valuable for the historical information they contain. We would greatly appreciate your assistance by encouraging veterans to provide us with these types of materials so that we can preserve them and make them available for research into the future.

AMAW is conducting a donor survey to determine the extent of modern war veterans' records and these veterans' willingness to donate their materials to the Archive. The results of this survey will be used in a grant application that will bring in the funding we need to establish the Archive. Could you please encourage modern war veterans to complete this survey? The survey is at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/99P2235.

Below is a brochure that explains more about the Archive. Thank you for your support.
