Blackhorse E-News Special Edition:

Paver Program
National Armor and Cavalry Heritage Foundation
The Blackhorse Association's paver program to fund the new 11th Cavalry memorial at Fort Benning is finished, and it was a huge success thanks to the generosity of so many of you. Now we can shift our focus and try to help the National Armor and Cavalry Heritage Foundation (NACHF) fund and create a new armor and cavalry museum at Fort Benning; this will be adjacent to our new memorial. As most of you already know, the Patton Museum at Fort Knox no longer houses the Army's armored vehicle collection. We are happy that the collection has finally been consolidated at Fort Benning and that preservation and restoration facilities are available to maintain the collection. However, for the first time since 1949, the collection is not open to the public.

Why should you donate to help build the National Armor and Cavalry Museum? The US Army Armor collection contains an almost complete and unbroken progression of US, French, and British WWI tanks; interwar US prototypes; and WWII US tanks and other armored vehicles, including self-propelled artillery, anti-tank vehicles, and amphibious tanks. In the collection, WWII German and Japanese armored vehicles provide a stark contrast to their US counterparts. Cobra King, an M4 Sherman upgrade, was the first tank to lift the siege at Bastogne, and it ended up at Hammelburg where it was disabled during Task Force Baum's ill-fated attempt to rescue Patton's son-in-law at the Hammelburg POW lager. Two German Tiger tanks grace the collection: one Tiger from North Africa and a King Tiger from the Battle of the Bulge. The Army's collection of vehicles includes a Korean War era Sherman tank, the M-26 Pershing tank, as well as tanks and armored vehicles of the mid-to-late Cold War era: M-48s, M113s, M114s, M551 Sheridans, M-60s, MBT-70, M1 Abrams tank, and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Cold War Soviet armored vehicles are also in abundance, as well as relics of the Arab-Israeli conflicts, Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The NACHF is dedicated to building the National Armor and Cavalry Museum so that this collection can be on display for current and future generations to see. This is a great opportunity for all of us to be part of preserving our heritage and honoring the service and sacrifice of our mounted warriors and the families that stood beside them.

You can create a permanent acknowledgment of your service, or you can honor a loved one with a commemorative paver. With a $250 tax-deductible donation, you will receive a gift of a paver, a duplicate paver, and a miniature replica of your paver to be displayed on your desk or given as a very personal gift to someone special.

Your paver will be installed in the Armor or Cavalry Sections (Sections 12 or 19) of the Heritage Walk adjacent to the National Infantry Museum. The walkway proceeds along the east side of the National Infantry Museum under the flags of all 50 states and leads to the "sacred soil" of the parade field. It is "sacred" because soil has been collected from major battlefields in US history and scattered over the parade field. Your paver will be truly placed on hallowed ground.

Your duplicate paver will be available for later placement at the new National Armor and Cavalry Museum when it's completed.

To donate by mail, please make your check payable to the "National Armor and Cavalry Heritage Foundation" and mail it to 3575 Macon Road, Suite 30, Columbus, GA 31907.
