Blackhorse E-News Special Edition:
Progress on our Memorial at Fort Benning

The following note was sent to our Association President, Glenn Snodgrass, by Allen Hathaway, President of the 11th Armored Cavalry's Veterans of Vietnam & Cambodia (11ACVVC) concerning the progress on our monument and memorial at Fort Benning. As many of you know, the movement of the monument from Fort Knox to Fort Benning was funded by both the 11ACVVC and the Blackhorse Association. Allan Hathaway sent this update, along with several photos. Posted below are two of the photos. The rest are available at http://blackhorse.org/monument.cfm.

Glenn,

Returned from Columbus late Sunday. The memorial looks good. I'm very pleased. The new panels look great. They sandblasted the details of the horse and unit crest. Both are excellent.

The heat was brutal. High 90's all week. Working in the sun quickly sapped your energy.

Steve Page (Geri), Frank Church (Sheri) and I (Pam) along with anywhere from 2-4 workers from Columbus Monument spent Monday and Tuesday unpacking, sorting, matching, and arranging the 900 bric

ks from Knox plus the 650 new bricks. On Wednesday, the "brick layers" began placing the bricks in one section. They could only work 1/2 day as they had another commitment. They came back on Friday to finish the one section, and two crews came today. It takes a full day per section.

The new base looks good. The brass plaques still have to be mounted to the Vietnam memorial. The cross at the top has to be fixed. They will correct the 4 Blackhorse insignias on the top as well.

The $17,000 sidewalk has been poured except for a small 6 foot section near the Walk of Honor. Some caulking also has to be done around the seams of the memorials.

A big Blackhorse thanks to Allan and his crew who are working along with the contractors to get our monument and memorial ready for its rededication (special eBlast to follow with details).
