Healthy Recipe of the Month


Vegan Chocolate Mouse Pie

 

INGREDIENTS
  
2 cups non-dairy chocolate chips

1 precooked vegan pie shell
1 block silken tofu

For garnish: Fresh berries

 

DIRECTIONS
  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.
  2. In an oven-safe dish add the chocolate chips and bake until melted, 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Remove dish from oven, pour melted chips in blender with one block of silken tofu. Blend until smooth, and pour mixture in precooked pie shell.
  4. Place pie in fridge for 2 hours to set. Slice, and serve with fresh berries.

Serves 8.

What do you do at Brenda Athletic Clubs? Which programs do you utilize?  

I work with EJ who is the Personal Training Supervisor. We strength train and stretch my arm due to having a stroke.

 

 

How many days and for how long do you work out?

3 times per week, 30 minutes per session

 

What changes have you seen in your body and health since you have been working out?

I have so much more mobility in my arm and body now since I've started working out with a trainer.

 

What has been the biggest change in your life due to your exercise routine?

Biggest change is my everyday use of my arm and what I can do with it.

 

How do you feel that BAC staff and fitness facility has made your fitness goals successful?

They have held me accountable, also pushed and motivated me to keep trying my best.

 

How do you enjoy spending your leisure time? Any hobbies?

Car shows and detailing my Shelby Mustang

 

Any other thoughts you would like to share with us regarding your success?

I have come such a long way when I never thought I could, all thanks to the assistance provided through my personal trainer.

Benefits of Getting Fit with a Buddy!



Exercising with a friend 'helps to lose more weight' Exercising with a friend is better than going to the gym alone because the competition helps people lose weight, according to a new study.
Researchers found participants with a partner in the high support group lost the most weight.    

Researchers compared the weight loss of a group of men and women who joined a fitness program on their own with a group who invited one or more friends to join in.

They found that if the friend attended keep fit sessions frequently and also lost weight it spurred their partner to do the same.

Professor Shiriki Kumanyika and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia, conducted the two-year trial with the help of 344 men and women.

The goal was to achieve and maintain a 5 per cent to 10 per cent weight loss and volunteers were educated on a healthy diet and physical activity, given pedometers and enrolled in exercise sessions.

A total of 63 people enrolled in the programme alone and 281 enrolled with a friend or family member.


The groups were split into three sections, those who trained alone, those who had a partner that received little coaching and those who were with a friend who also had a high level of coaching.

Their progress was then measured at intervals of six, 12, 18 and 24 months.

 

According to the research, published in the latest issue of Archives of Internal Medicine journal, the participants with a partner in the high support group lost the most weight at all the measurement periods.

In addition, the people who had partners that shed at least 5 per cent of their body weight experienced a greater weight loss than those whose partner shifted less that 5 per cent.

 

Prof Kumanyika said: "We evaluated family and friend social support as a specific cultural adaptation strategy.

 

"Beneficial effects on weight loss were linked to actual rather than assigned partner participation and to partner success in losing weight.

"Further studies may elucidate ways to facilitate effective family or friend participation and to improve absolute weight losses."

 

The study was carried out on African-American volunteers to discover weight loss incentives as research suggests that standard behavioural treatments for obesity appear to be less successful in that ethnic group.

"Cultural modifications to these standard programs-such as the inclusion of family members and support networks-may enhance their effectiveness," the report author said.

February is not only Valentine's Day; it's also American Heart Month and it's the perfect time to give your heart a little TLC. Find out how you can lower your risk of heart disease with a few simple heart-healthy tips from my family's favorite doctor, Dr. Paul Popeck.

Celebrate American Heart Month -Celebrate by scheduling a physical each year around Valentine's Day. Talk with your doctor about reducing your risks for heart disease and be sure to get lab work done to screen for cholesterol, thyroid, anemia, and diabetes.

Eat Right-Enjoy a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, and proteins. Lower your saturated fats, and complex carbohydrate intake. These can affect your insulin levels which affect your metabolism and cholesterol levels.

Get Moving-Exercise 30 minutes at least 3-4 times a week. It will strengthen your heart muscle and increase your metabolism. Physical activity also releases endorphins (those feel good chemicals) which act like adrenalin rushes and help make us feel better about ourselves.

Make a Lifestyle Change- Avoid smoking, reduce stress, and limit all alcohol. Treat yourself to a day at the spa or try a yoga class.

Heart Health Tests-Schedule cardiac testing depending on your risk factors and genetics. Exercise stress tests and echocardiograms (ultrasounds of the heart) are wonderful screening tests to determine the health of your heart.

  Dumbbell Triceps Kickbacks 
 

 

Description:
In this exercise, the upper arm muscles are dynamically strengthened, while the back muscles gain static strength (muscular endurance) if good posture is used. 
 
Instructions:

 

1. Place your right hand and right kneeon the bench. Keep your back straight throughout the exercise and try not to shrug your shoulders up toward your ears.

 

2. With the weight in your left hand, keep your upper left arm next to your body at all times. Straighten your arm slowly, then return to the start by bending at the elbow, still keeping your upper arm against your body. 

Do 10 - 15 repetitions, then switch sides.
