March Save-the-Dates

March: National Talk to Your Teen about Sex Month: Youth can make responsible decisions about sexuality, pregnancy, and parenting, as well as be effective parents, when they have complete, accurate, and culturally relevant age, gender, and developmentally appropriate information, skills, resources, and support.

March 1st: Self-Injury Awareness Day: Raising awareness about self-injury is incredibly important. Awareness leads to understanding and empathy, banishing judgment and fear, and reducing the number of people who feel alone and suffer in silence.

March 8th: International Women's Day:

Over time and distance, the equal rights of women have progressed. We celebrate the achievements of women while remaining vigilant and tenacious for further sustainable change. There is global momentum for championing women's equality.

March 10th: National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day:

Encourage people to take action in the fight against HIV/AIDS and raise awareness of its impact on women and girls.

News
"It is one thing for a school board to think about which of the K-12 programs are most important to the K-12 students in their district, and decide priorities. It is quite another to pit two different groups of children (K-12 students and young children of teen parents) against each other for funding," says Nina Buthee executive director of the  California Child Development Administrators Association (CCDAA). CCDAA is sponsoring AB 1152, a bill authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), that would exempt California School Age Families Education (Cal-SAFE) Program from categorical "flexing" -- protecting funding for programs for teen parents from proposed changes to categorical programs. If passed, the bill will also require that unused Cal-SAFE funds not be retained by local education agencies (LEAs), but be returned to Cal-SAFE's state-wide budget line. The Cal-SAFE program, begun in 2000, works with teenaged parents, providing academic and support services to help keep them in school. According to TeenNow California, Cal-SAFE's in-school program has had a 75% graduation rate (compared to a national graduate rate of 33% for teen parents.)  In an e-mail to California's Children, CCDAA's Buthee said: "Most of the categoricals serve K-12 students (Miller-Unruh reading program, text book funding, home to school transportation, etc., etc.).  CalSAFE's child development dollars are targeted at a different group of children - the children of teen parents..."Education for K-12 students is mandated by the state Constitution, and local boards cannot eliminate education for any of those students - they must spend the money on those students, it is just how to spend the money on them.  There is no mandate to serve the young children of teen parents.  What happens when there is budget pressure, including the pressure of negotiations with unions?  One group the board must serve, the other it can eliminate." CCDAA is seeking additional co-authors.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, teen pregnancy rates declined steadily in all 50 states between 1988 and 2005. However, between 2005 and 2008, the teen pregnancy rate decreased by 5% or more in 7 states, while increasing by 5% or more in 16 states, according to "U.S. Teenage Pregnancies, Births and Abortions, 2008: State Trends by Age, Race and Ethnicity." While these short-term increases are troubling, recent evidence from the CDC, including further reductions in teen birth rates in nearly all states between 2008 and 2010 and preliminary numbers indicating a decrease in teen abortions in 2009, indicate that teen pregnancy rates will continue their long-term declines.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced a public-private partnership to expand access to a contraceptive implant for more than 27 million women in low-income countries. Developed through a partnership between the Gates Foundation, Bayer HealthCare, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation, the United Nations Population Fund, and the governments of Norway, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the United States, the Jadelle Access Program will work to make the long-acting reversible contraceptive implant available over the next six years at a cost 50 percent lower than the current price. "In July 2012, global leaders pledged to provide women around the world with greater access to more contraceptive options, and today, we are one step closer to delivering on this promise," said Gates Foundation co-chair Melinda Gates. "We hope this will be the first of many innovative partnerships that will help give women and girls the power to create better lives for themselves and their families."

Webinar: Strategies for Integrating Sexual and Reproductive Health Care into the Primary Health Care Setting

When: Thursday March 14, 2013, 12pm-1:30pm

What:  Integrating sexual and reproductive health care into your primary care patient delivery system requires an understanding of knowing what is needed beyond basic dip sticks for pregnancy tests. Administrators will want to develop policies and procedures that outline how the sexual and reproductive health needs will be addressed by each member of the health care team. Providing adequate staff training and creating an environment that encourages patient's to discuss their most personal and intimate health care concerns are just a few small steps you can take. In this training, we will examine future federal guidelines regarding the provision of basic sexual and reproductive health care. And we will aim to demonstrate what successful integration looks like from the front office to the back office and everywhere in between.$75 Hosted by the California Family Health Council

Webinar: Common Concerns: The Impact of Contraceptive Choices and Patient Outcomes

When: Thursday April 11, 2013, 12pm-1:30pm

What: Women of reproductive age, coming in for a common medical concerns or chronic disease care, are more likely to be at risk for pregnancy due to the fact that many providers ignore their sexuality. These patients can be easily assessed for pregnancy risk by asking a few key questions while obtaining vital signs. Answers to these simple questions can lead to basic counseling that will assist patients in fulfilling their reproductive goals and prevent unintended pregnancy. This training will cover the necessary questions and brief counseling messages that can be given at any and all primary care visits which can pave the way for a more comprehensive assessment of your patient's reproductive needs. $75 Hosted by the California Family Health Council

Can you tell the difference between love and control?

Quote of the Month

"If I were really asked to define myself, I wouldn't start with race; I wouldn't start with blackness; I wouldn't start with gender; I wouldn't start with feminism. I would start with stripping down to what fundamentally informs my life, which is that I'm a seeker on the path. I think of feminism, and I think of anti-racist struggles as part of it. But where I stand spiritually is, steadfastly, on a path about love." -bell hooks
