These scholarships are vital to help young people achieve their goals, and you can help! A small donation of $20 can contribute to the education of a teen in your area. Please help now. California youth need opportunities to succeed!

Fundraising Goal: $3,400

Campaign Dates: Dec. 1st, 2012 to Jan. 31st, 2013

Words from past recipients: "School has been hard, money has always been tight, and parenthood has been exhausting. Ask me if I'd change any of it my reply would be no. All of this has made me into who I am and now I know who I want to be." -Jordyn

"My son completely changed the way I think. When I found out I was going to have a baby I started to care about school and my grades. All I thought of doing was graduating and going to college to become a nurse or dental assistant. I think of being a nurse because ever since I was pregnant I saw that they help people and that's what I want to do" -Estefania

"When I found out I was going to be a teen father I was in tenth grade...All I remember my grandmother telling me was she was not shocked and to get a job. My family was not very supportive. I am going to do what I need to do to be a good father to my daughter. I am not going to be like my parents. I am going to be there for my child." -Miguel

Pap Test Could Help Find Cancers of Uterus and Ovaries
The Pap test, which has prevented countless deaths from cervical cancer, may eventually help to detect cancers of the uterus and ovaries as well, a new study suggests. For the first time, researchers have found genetic material from uterine or ovarian cancers in Pap smears, meaning that it may become possible to detect three diseases with just one routine test. "Probably one of the most exciting features of this approach," Dr. Diaz said, "is that we wanted a test that would seamlessly integrate with routine medical practice that could be utilized with the same test that women get every day all over the world, the Pap smear."
The group says Americans find the terms "pro-choice" and "pro-life" unacceptably limiting, and it wants to move beyond them. "I'm neither pro-choice nor pro-life," said one woman in a focus group commissioned by Planned Parenthood. "I'm pro-whatever-the-situation is." Said another, "there should be three: pro-life, pro-choice and something in the middle that helps people understand circumstances [...] It's not just back or white, there's grey." A recent research push by the organization found that large numbers of Americans feel this way - uncomfortable with both the pro-life and pro-choice labels. And so Planned Parenthood's newest messaging will be moving away from the language of choice. Polling conducted on Planned Parenthood's behalf appears to show some dissatisfaction with the labels. In one 2012 poll, 35% of voters who identified as pro-life also believed Roe v. Wade should not be overturned (7% of pro-choice voters, meanwhile, thought it should be). And in an online survey of recent voters, 12% said they were both pro-life and pro-choice, and another 12% said they wouldn't use those terms. When asked for their moral opinions on abortion, 40% of those voters said "it depends on the situation" - far more than called the procedure either acceptable or unacceptable.

HPV-linked Cancers Up, Vaccination is Safe and Legal but not Required

Currently in California it is not required for adolescent girls to be vaccinated for the human papillomavirus (HPV). According to reporter Eryn Brown, writing for the Los Angeles Times, this year's National Cancer Institute's, Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer, cancer rates in the United States have been dropping 1.5% each year. That's the good news. The bad news is that the report also reveals upticks in those cancers that are associated with HPV. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HPV can cause cervical, vulvar, vaginal, penile, anal and oropharyngeal (back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils) cancer. Each year, more than 21,000 HPV-associated cancers occur in women; cervical being the most common. More than 12,000 HPV-associated cancers occur each year in men; oropharyngeal being the most common.  These numbers are rising at a time when it is technically legal and safe for girls to get vaccinated for the infection, and yet researchers report that nationally, only 32% of girls 13-17 complete the three-dose HPV vaccination series.
