January is for Looking Forward
|
Greetings!
Happy New Year! As you ring in the new year, take a few moments to write down your intentions for 2013. Studies show those who take the time to put pen to paper are more likely to achieve their goals. Perhaps these are personal dreams? Professional goals? The sky is the limit. This year is YOUR year! Let TeenNow know how we can support you. |
Annual Scholarship DriveWe're raising money to support our teen scholarship program! Every year, we give out scholarships to eight California teen parents and one California teen student leader to help them go on to secondary education-college or vocational school-after they graduate from high school. These scholarships are vital to help young people achieve their goals, and you can help! A small donation of $20 can contribute to the education of a teen in your area. Please help now. California youth need opportunities to succeed! Fundraising Goal: $3,400 Campaign Dates: Dec. 1st, 2012 to Jan. 31st, 2013 Words from past recipients: "School has been hard, money has always been tight, and parenthood has been exhausting. Ask me if I'd change any of it my reply would be no. All of this has made me into who I am and now I know who I want to be." -Jordyn "My son completely changed the way I think. When I found out I was going to have a baby I started to care about school and my grades. All I thought of doing was graduating and going to college to become a nurse or dental assistant. I think of being a nurse because ever since I was pregnant I saw that they help people and that's what I want to do" -Estefania "When I found out I was going to be a teen father I was in tenth grade...All I remember my grandmother telling me was she was not shocked and to get a job. My family was not very supportive. I am going to do what I need to do to be a good father to my daughter. I am not going to be like my parents. I am going to be there for my child." -Miguel
Scholarships for pregnant and parenting teens and teens who have demonstrated leadership in the reproductive health field are offered by TeenNow California each year. The 2013 scholarships are now available online with a March deadline. (((Remember! Each scholarship applicant must be sponsored (no monetary involvement necessary) by a CURRENTLY paid TeenNow member.))) Find information, applications, and donate to our scholarship fund online here on our scholarships page.

About half of the 6.7 million pregnancies in the United States each year are unintended. For women and families, births resulting from unintended pregnancies have been linked to adverse maternal and child health outcomes and myriad social and economic challenges. Births stemming from unintended pregnancy are also costly to the federal and state governments, resulting in $11 billion in government expenditures in 2006. To provide a one-stop resource and comprehensive overview, the Guttmacher Institute is launching a new tool that offers more than two dozen state-specific indicators related to unintended pregnancy. These state fact sheets detail the impact unintended pregnancy has on women, families and society overall," says Adam Sonfield, senior public policy associate at Guttmacher, who led the team that developed the fact sheets. "They are a comprehensive resource that documents the significant state-level benefits of investing in publicly funded family planning services, both in helping women avert unintended pregnancies, births and abortions, and generating considerable savings to the federal and state governments."
