Oral contraceptives (OCs) should be sold over the counter (OTC) in drugstores without a doctor's prescription, according to The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (The College). Easier access to OCs should help lower the nation's high unintended pregnancy rate, a rate that has not changed over the past 20 years and costs taxpayers an estimated $11.1 billion annually.

Cost, access, and convenience issues are common reasons why women do not use contraception or use it inconsistently. There are no OCs currently approved for OTC access, but The College believes OTC availability will improve women's access to and usage of contraception. The benefits of making OCs easily accessible OTC outweigh the risks, says The College. Studies show women support OTC access to OCs and are able to self-screen with checklists to determine their health risks. Evidence also shows that women will continue seeing their doctor for screening and preventive services even when allowed to purchase OCs without a prescription or doctor's appointment. Women who receive more than one month's supply of OCs at a time have higher contraceptive continuation rates than those who receive fewer pill packs.

ipad  iPad Video Game to Teach HIV Prevention Skills

What's new in Elm City? The games people play might lower their HIV risks. That's what researchers hope as they develop an iPad video game for at-risk youth of color. "Our game aims to change behavior in teens before they begin having sex," says Kimberly Hieftje, PhD, who works with Yale's Play2Prevent initiative to develop "serious games." Based on interviews with kids in New Haven, Connecticut, the interactive, educational game-titled PlayForward: Elm City Stories-allows youths to create avatars that face real-life decisions. Once players find out the results of their actions, they can go back in time to make better choices. This way, in reality they won't need a do-over.

"I'm Positive" to Air on MTV Networks on World AIDS Day

MTV announced that it will air "I'm Positive," a 60-minute special produced by DrDrew Productions and Octagon Entertainment on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT, with a simulcast on MTV Tr3s. "I'm Positive" goes inside the lives of three young people from around the country who are HIV positive. Although each faces struggles that are part of living with this virus, they all work to maintain a positive outlook on life, while taking steps to remain healthy and to stop the spread of HIV. Click here to watch a sneak peek scene of the special. Presented under the "GYT: Get Yourself Tested" campaign, which is part of MTV's 15-year public information partnership with the Kaiser Family Foundation, "I'm Positive" dispels common myths and stereotypes associated with HIV.

Rethinking HIV: After Five Years of Debate, a New Push for Prevention

After decades of focusing almost exclusively on treating HIV, public health experts are now considering a new approach, moving to establish more effective prevention strategies to curb spread of the disease. Recent tests show that anti-HIV drugs that can hamper the growth of the virus responsible for AIDS may also prevent progression of the disease if given to infected individuals soon after their exposure to HIV. The same drugs can also prevent infections from taking hold among healthy people who are exposed to the virus; both approaches would be critical ways of controlling spread of the virus and keeping new cases of HIV to a minimum. With this potential in mind, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued a draft recommendation urging that all people between the ages of 15 and 65 be tested for the virus as part of routine health screening, even if they are not at  high risk of exposure to HIV.
