About 20 percent of teens don't know about their positive HIV status when they engage in sexual activities for the first time, National Institutes of Health reports. Almost 10,000 people in the U.S. are HIV positive at or before birth, says Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these teens have reported to have engaged in unprotected sex. Parents and caregivers often decide to tell the child that he/she is HIV positive only after the child reaches adolescence. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that physicians discuss the issue of disclosing the child's HIV status with the parent or caregiver. Safe-sex practices are especially important for these children as they are at a greater risk of passing the infection and getting a sexually transmitted infection. "Our findings show that these young people act very much like their HIV-negative counterparts across the country. However, because of their HIV status, it is extremely important for health care providers, school counselors and family members to reinforce the importance of practicing safe sex, taking medication regularly and disclosing HIV status to potential partners," said Rohan Hazra, M.D., of the Pediatric, Adolescent and Maternal AIDS Branch of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Sign on to the Declaration to End HIV/AIDS in AmericaThe National Minority AIDS Council and leaders from the national HIV/AIDS movement have unveiled the Declaration to End HIV/AIDS in America. NMAC held a signing ceremony at the first ever Summit to End HIV/AIDS in America, held in conjunction with the 16th annual United States Conference on AIDS this past October. Signatories underscored critical scientific and policy developments that will greatly impact the fight against HIV/AIDS and committed themselves fully to realizing the dream of an America without AIDS. A lack of parental support and the challenges of teen pregnancy are among the primary factors driving students to leave high school before earning their diploma, according to a new report released today. Twenty-three percent of high school dropouts surveyed cited lack of support and encouragement from their parents as the reason they quit school, the report by Harris Interactive, a research firm, and Everest College revealed. Another 21 percent said they dropped out after having a child of their own, according to the survey, which included responses from 513 American adults, ages 19 to 35, who have not completed high school. Schools need to understand what motivates students to drop out in order to address the problem, says John Swartz, regional director of career services at Everest College.
