In this Issue

The NH Bar Association Pro Bono Referral Program has referred nearly 50 veterans' legal cases to volunteer lawyers so far in 2015. Currently, there are two veterans in need of legal assistance:

Nashua vet would like to file for divorce. The opposing party is out of the country with the child, but both parties would like the divorce to go forward. This vet could use some advice on how to proceed. He has been informed that he will have to pay any international service fees.

Another Nashua veteran needs help with a student loan issue. Since early 2014, Social Security has been withholding a portion of the veteran's disability benefit to offset a student loan for a family member. The veteran knew nothing about the loan and, upon reviewing the documents, saw the signature was not in his handwriting.

If you can help these veterans, please contact Janice. If you want to be added to the Pro Bono Veterans Panel for future cases, let Janice know. Pro Bono thanks all of those who have already answered the call.

Patriots, Pirates, Politicians and Profit Seekers
The NH Bar Association recently published a fully updated version of Patriots, Pirates, Politicians and Profit Seekers, a collection of New Hampshire cases at the US Supreme Court. The new edition features new cases heard over the last two decades and a 188-page teacher's edition, with references to NH education standards.

This book is free to download on the NHBA website. This video, Never Say Die, was produced in concert with the 1996 version of the book. It discusses one of the cases in the book and features attorneys Jack Middleton and David DePuy.

The NH Board of Bar Examiners seeks applications from Bar members to fill open board seats. The board oversees all aspects of admission to the New Hampshire bar, as set forth in Supreme Court Rule 42. The appointment for a three-year renewable term is open to practicing lawyers who have been active members of the bar association for at least five years and who have an interest in legal education and bar admissions. Applications are due by Nov. 30.

For more information, see the notice from the Office of Bar Admissions.

The bar, bench, legislature, executive branch and public are invited to submit comment on the proposed new unified rules of criminal procedure. In a memo preceding the order, the NH Supreme Court stated that the proposed rules were approved by the court in 2010, but adoption was deferred due to ongoing projects.

An ad hoc committee earlier this year revised the proposed rules, which codify existing practices and "are not intended to change any existing rule or add any rules."

Comments should be submitted by Nov. 12 to [email protected].
