Calling hours for the late Ruth Ansell, a well-known Bedford estate-planning attorney, will be from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the Goodwin Funeral Home, 607 Chestnut St., Manchester.

Ansell, who was very active in the Elder, Estate Planning and Probate Law Section and in Bar Association public service, passed away April 8 at the age of 60.

Law Day - When Love Hurts New this year: When Love Hurts is a new program choice for Law Day presentations for grades 8-12. It offers a pre-developed presentation on teen dating violence.

The Bar Association wants to bring this program to more locations. If you know of a school or a youth organization that might benefit from a volunteer attorney making a presentation on recognizing and preventing teen dating violence, please contact NHBA Law Related Education Coordinator Robin E. Knippers, 603-715-3259.



The NH Division of Personnel is looking for new members and alternate members of the NH Personnel Appeals Board to serve staggered three-year terms. Membership is by appointment by the governor and Executive Council.

The board hears and decides appeals by classified state employees on employment decisions ranging from employee classification to discipline and dismissal. Board members receive $100 per diem for hearing days, but no travel reimbursement.

United States Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. will deliver the John W. King Lecture at the New Hampshire Supreme Court on May 16.

The King lecture series is co-sponsored by the New Hampshire Supreme Court and the New Hampshire Supreme Court Society. A limited number of seats are available for General Verrilli's lecture.

Learn from practitioners about how businesses solve cross-border disputes at this FREE seminar at 4 p.m. Monday, April 28, at UNH Law. Presenters include W. Scott O'Connell (Nixon Peabody), Steve Boyce (Excelitas general counsel), John Broderick Jr. (UNH Law), and Suzanne Ulicny (International Chamber of Commerce in New York).

Topics will include: International dispute resolution from the vantage point of general counsel, increasing use of international arbitration by the business community, role of the ICC and other arbitration institutions, and differences between international litigation and international arbitration.

The NH Supreme Court on April 4 issued an order adopting proposed amendments to court rules, including rules related to exchanging pleadings by email, rules for client trust account records, and preservation of issues for appeal. The order (83-page PDF) also adopts a number of temporary rules on a permanent basis.


Manchester attorney Richard J. Joyal will be presented with the Manchester Bar Association's Distinguished Service Award at its annual award dinner on Tuesday, April 22, at the Bedford Village Inn.

The event, starting with a reception at 5:30 p.m., will also honor retiring judges from area courts. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m.

The Pro Bono Referral Program is looking for a sponsor for its hole-in-one contest at the annual Quid Pro Bono Golf Tournament fundraiser on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Lake Sunapee Country Club. The sponsorship of about $500 covers the cost of insuring the winning prize - a new car! Contest sponsors get marketing exposure before and during the event.
