The following attorneys will be honored at the NH Bar Association Midyear Meeting on March 7 in Manchester. These awards recognize achievement and dedication to public and community service in a variety of settings.
With the exception of the Philip Hollman Gender Equality Award, presented at the Gender Equality breakfast, these awards will be presented at the Honors & Awards Luncheon. NHBA Distinguished Service to the Public Award  Gordon J. MacDonald is a partner at Nixon Peabody in Manchester. For the past two years, MacDonald has chaired the Campaign for Legal Services, the fundraising effort that supports NH Legal Assistance, the Legal Advice & Referral Center and the NH Pro Bono Referral Program. During the past two campaigns, the effort has raised more than $500,000. He has also testified on behalf of an increased state appropriation for civil legal services for the poor before the NH Legislature, and serves on the NH Access to Justice Commission. For the past three years, MacDonald also has chaired the NH Board of Bar Examiners, which plays a key role in evaluating the competence of new attorneys licensed to practice in New Hampshire. And... MacDonald has regularly volunteered as a panel attorney for the NH Pro Bono's Domestic Violence Emergency Project (DOVE).

Philip Hollman Gender Equality Award  Heather E. Krans, of counsel to the Stein Law Firm, concentrates her practice in the areas of domestic relations and appellate law. She recently chaired the Family Law Section of the NH Bar Association. As president of the New Hampshire Women's Bar Association from 2004 to 2006, she helped respond to members' requests for programming on work-life balance issues. She serves on the board of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England and on the board of the Women's Fund of New Hampshire. Krans also has participated in programs on a national level for the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations. She earned her BA from the University of Vermont in 1994 and her JD from Emory University School of Law in 1997.

NHBA Vickie Bunnell Award for Community Service
Jonathan Frizzell, a native of New Hampshire's North Country, is a partner in the firm of Waystack Frizzell, Trial Lawyers, of Colebrook. He has been with the firm since 1996 and became a partner in 2002. He is a member of the First Colebrook Bank Board of Directors and a former member of the Coos County Planning Board for the Unincorporated Places. He is active in the Colebrook Bambino Baseball League and coaches the Colebrook Junior High boys' basketball team. He also served on the New Hampshire Supreme Court Committtee on Civil Access to Justice.
Frizzell served as Colebrook Town Moderator from 1999 to 2007 and currently serves as the School Moderator for Colebrook. He is a former Colebrook School Board member and former chair of the School District Building Committee. Frizzell returned to his hometown of Colebrook - the same town where Vickie Bunnell practiced law - after earning a BA at Dartmouth College and a JD from the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

Public Interest Law Award

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Strelzin is chief of the homicide unit. His position, which he has held for nearly a decade, requires around-the-clock commitment and availability, as he is the first contact for law enforcement investigating any suspicious death in the state. He is the longest-serving homicide chief in New Hampshire history and performs the duties of his demanding job with professionalism and great compassion. In addition to supervising all homicide prosecutions in New Hampshire, Strelzin also has handled some high-profile cases himself, including State v. Michael Addison and State v. Christopher Gribble. He also ably handled global press attention when Manuel Gehring kidnapped and killed his two young children. Strelzin also mentors younger attorneys and routinely lectures at high s chools, colleges and law schools throughout the region. He is dedicated to protecting the rights and safety of New Hampshire citizens and to ensuring that victims of violent crime receive justice in the courtroom. |
