The New Hampshire Bar Association will hold a special business meeting and budget information session at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Bar Center, 2 Pillsbury St., Concord. All members are invited to attend and vote on proposed amendments to the NHBA Bylaws and Constitution and receive information about the association budget adopted for FY2014. Proposed amendments include the addition of an "out-of-state" board seat to the NHBA Board of Governors. Read text and explanation of amendments.

The NH Bar Gender Equality Committee is seeking nominations for its Philip S. Hollman Gender Equality Award. The award will be presented at the 2014 NHBA Midyear Meeting on March 7. The award recognizes an individual or organization that promotes gender equality through leadership and educating others. Nominees can be Bar members, law firm or court employees, or employees of state departments or agencies that are part of the legal system. The NH Bar Association Board of Governors is accepting nomination petitions for vice president, governor at large (two vacancies, three-year terms), county governors representing Belknap, Carroll, Cheshire (special election to complete one-year term), Hillsborough North, Hillsborough South, Strafford and Sullivan counties, and an association delegate to the American Bar Association House of Delegates. To be on the ballot for the April 2014 election, nominations must be submitted by March 1, 2014, to Secretary, NH Bar Association, 2 Pillsbury St., Suite 300, Concord, NH 03301-3502. In the event of inclement weather, closings or delayed openings at the Bar Center will be communicated via the Bar's website and on our voicemail greeting at the Bar Center. If the Bar Center is experiencing a delayed opening, we will be open as soon as is reasonably possible for staff to safely get in to the office. If you are in doubt about the status of any meeting, please call the Bar Center before you head out.

The NH Supreme Court seeks volunteers to serve on the committees that make up the New Hampshire Attorney Discipline System. While applications are welcome at any time, beginning in January 2014 there will be openings for attorneys and non-attorneys to serve on two of the three committees that are part of the system: the Professional Conduct Committee and the Hearings Committee. There is a particular need for non-lawyer committee members. A description of the Attorney Discipline System and of the role of each committee, as well as an application, can be found on the Attorney Discipline System website at "Volunteer Opportunities." Individuals interested in being considered for appointment to a committee should complete an Attorney Discipline System Committee Application and submit it to Janet F. DeVito, General Counsel, New Hampshire Supreme Court Attorney Discipline Office, 4 Chenell Drive, Suite 102, Concord, NH 03301 by December 31, 2013.

Paul Martineau, welfare commissioner for the City of Manchester, is seeking volunteer lawyers to do pro bono service by conducting hearings on city welfare appeals. When welfare clients get an adverse decision from city welfare workers reviewing their application, the client can request a Fair Hearing, to be held within seven working days. The Fair Hearing Officer makes his/her decision based on RSA 165 and city guidelines. We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution NEEDS attorneys to volunteer as timers for the state finals from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the Legislative Office Building in Concord. Having attorneys sign up as timers ensures that, in the event of cancellations, we have attorneys on hand to move into the role of judge. The NH Bar's solo and small-firm networking group meets monthly (except in the summer) to share knowledge and learn together about issues unique to the solo and small firm practice setting. All meetings occur at the Bar Center in Concord, with meeting times alternating between noontime and late afternoons. Here's a list of upcoming dates and times:

Frederic K. Upton, a past president of the New Hampshire Bar Association and a major figure in the New Hampshire legal community for many years, died Dec. 2, 2013, at his home in Exeter. He was 94. Upton obituary. The family requests that donations may be made to the Frederic Upton Justice Fund at the NH Bar Foundation. Donate online. (specify the Upton Fund in the message area).
