The December issue of NH Bar News will feature a special section on business law and business litigation. We are looking for articles pertaining to developments in the law, practical tips for attorneys, or other timely topics. Articles should be directed at a general legal audience and be between 800 and 1,000 words. Please submit your ideas to managing editor Kristen Senz no later than Nov. 8. The NH Supreme Court seeks applications to fill one position on the NH Board of Bar Examiners. The New Hampshire Board of Bar Examiners oversees all aspects of admission to the New Hampshire bar under Supreme Court Rule 42. The appointment is for a three-year term, and is renewable. Applicants must have been active members of the New Hampshire bar for at least five years, should be practicing lawyers skilled in legal analysis and writing, with an interest in legal education and requirements for admission to the bar. The New England Committee on Fathering seeks an attorney board member. Transactional/nonprofit experience desired. This is a unique volunteer opportunity to work with a multi-state committee representing New Hampshire. The New England Committee on Fathering works with disadvantaged fathers, including teens as young as 14, fathers who are or have been incarcerated and want to reestablish or maintain ties with their children, and grandfathers who have assumed the fathering role. The work of committee supports literacy efforts, parenting skills, and access to justice for disadvantaged fathers. Please contact Dr. Elaine Holden if you are interested.

 NHBA President Jaye Rancourt is convening a work group to develop an informational program for New Hampshire schools, to teach students about the problem of teen dating violence. The program will discuss how to identify signs of abuse in relationships and explain the legal consequences in New Hampshire of abusive behavior in a dating relationship. The information developed will be available for lawyers participating in the Lawyer and Judge in Every School visits in May. Please contact Jaye directly if you are interested in participating.  Help the public and have a good time doing it - Lawline, the Bar's telephone advice line, takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. Host firms or volunteers are needed for Dec. 11 and Jan. 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. Three to five attorneys answer calls and provide general advice from their homes or offices, with calls forwarded from our toll-free line. The Bar Association picks up the tab for pizza or sandwiches. Please contact Lisha Brosseau to find out more.

The NH Supreme Court has asked for amicus briefs in State v. Heidi Brouillette, regarding whether the state must pay for an expert witness in an indigent criminal defense case where the client is represented by someone other than the Public Defender.

The US District Court has posted proposed amendments to its local rules that are scheduled for adoption Dec. 1. The court will be accepting comments on the proposed rules until Nov. 2.
The rule changes cover, among other things, motions to extend, electronic disclosures, protective orders, dissemination of juror questionnaires, and attorney discipline rules. View the 27-page PDF file.
