A class action suit against the NCAA could radically change college sports as we know it.

Plaintiff Ed O'Bannon contends that current and former Division I men's basketball and football players should be paid for their image and likeness on television broadcasts, video games, trading cards, apparel and other commercial ventures.

A forum at UNH Law featuring a top editor from Sports Illustrated and the former executive director of the NBA Players Association, along with leading attorneys in the field of athlete representation, will focus on O'Bannon v. NCAA.

When and Where: Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 6-7:30 p.m., UNH Law, Room 282. Admission is free. (This is not a CLE program.)

Chinese dissident and human rights activist Chen Guangcheng will speak Wednesday, Nov. 6, at UNH School of Law about the domination of the Chinese government by the Chinese Communist Party.

In April 2012, Chen, a blind, self-taught lawyer, dramatically escaped house arrest in China and fled to the US Embassy. He and his immediate family left China, and Chen currently is the Lantos Foundation's Senior Advisor on Internet Freedom and Human Rights for Individuals with Disabilities.

The fall meeting of the Association of New Hampshire Law Librarians will feature a presentation about the new NH Superior Court Rules of Civil Procedure by attorney Gordon MacDonald.

This free event will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Susan N. McLane Audubon Center, 3 Silk Farm Road, Concord. Due to limited capacity, please register to attend by emailing [email protected].



The US District Court has posted proposed amendments to its local rules that are scheduled for adoption Dec. 1. The court will be accepting comments on the proposed rules until Nov. 2.

The rule changes cover, among other things, motions to extend, electronic disclosures, protective orders, dissemination of juror questionnaires, and attorney discipline rules. View the 27-page PDF file.

The NH Bar Gender Equality Committee is seeking nominations for its Philip S. Hollman Gender Equality Award. The award will be presented at the 2014 NHBA Midyear Meeting on March 7.

The award recognizes an individual or organization that promotes gender equality through leadership and educating others. Nominees can be Bar members, law firm or court employees, or employees of state departments or agencies that are part of the legal system.

Volunteers needed to act as judges and timers for the initial round of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution District on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Legislative Office Building in Concord. Time commitment is 9 a.m. - noon.

Judges and timers will also be needed for the state finals on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Volunteers can join us for the day or choose a morning or afternoon slot. State finals are held at the LOB.

The NH chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will host the Bill of Rights Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 3, at Fratellos Restaurant, 155 Dow St., Manchester, NH.

The Bill of Rights Award recipient is Valerie Cunningham, co-author of Black Portsmouth: Three Centuries of African American Heritage. The featured speaker is Dennis Parker, racial justice program director at the American Civil Liberties Union.

The Campaign for Legal Services is holding a cultivation event from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon. Join the Campaign to learn more about the work of New Hampshire's civil legal aid programs: NH Legal Assistance, Legal Advice and Referral Center, and the NH Bar's Pro Bono Referral Program. This free event is supported by Dartmouth Hitchcock-Medical Center and Downs Rachlin & Martin. Light refreshments will be served. A retirement party for US District Court Clerk Jim Starr, celebrating his 35 years of service to the state and federal judiciaries, takes place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at the Grappone Conference Center, 70 Constitution Ave., Concord.

The New Hampshire Bar Association seeks nominations for the following awards, which will be presented at the NHBA Midyear Meeting on Friday, March 7, 2014:

Vickie M. Bunnell Award for Community Service
To applaud the community spirit that is a hallmark of the legal profession, this award is presented to an attorney from a small firm (four or fewer attorneys), who has exhibited dedication and devotion to community by giving of their time and talents, legal or otherwise.

Distinguished Service to the Public Award
This award is presented to the nominee who best exhibits service to the public on behalf of the administration of justice.

Outstanding Service in Public Sector/Public Interest Law Award
This award is presented to a member of the New Hampshire Bar, or an organization employing eligible members, who, at the time of the nomination, has at least five years of service, up to and including the time of the nomination, in government service, military service, law enforcement, public interest law services (including prosecution, public defense, legal advocacy in low-income communities, or for individuals with disabilities at a nonprofit organization), or 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Qualified individuals/organizations may be nominated more than once.
