Remember Your First Pro Bono Case?
Bar News would like members of the NH Bar Association to submit recollections of their very first pro bono case, to help us celebrate Pro Bono Month in October.

Please email news@nhbar.org with a description, what it was like working with your pro bono client, the outcome of the case, and how you felt when it was over. It doesn't matter if you took this case 50 years ago or five weeks ago. We'd like to hear from you. Please also include a number where you can be reached. Thanks!

Bar Center Planned Outage - 9/17
Computers at the NH Bar Center in Concord, including email for bar association staff, will be down for 1-3 hours starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17, for server maintenance and updating. If you have business at the Bar Center or need to contact a staff member that day, please be aware of this short outage and plan accordingly.

NHBA Paralegal Award and Luncheon - 9/20
At the 30th anniversary of the Paralegal Association of NH's Annual Meeting, NHBA President Jaye Rancourt will present the Bar's Paralegal Professionalism award to Anna McLaughlin of the Boutin Alteiri firm in Londonderry. Her nomination was submitted by attorneys Edmund J. Boutin and Lynne G. Sabean.

The daylong meeting at the Bedford Village Inn includes an address by Attorney General Joseph Foster at the luncheon and several training programs. PANH meeting details and registration.

Call Center Notice: Unblock to Receive Court Calls
Since the transition of the Circuit Court to one phone number for all locations (1-855-212-1234), all Circuit Court phones have become private lines. For this reason, all outgoing calls from Circuit Court locations show up on caller ID as "Blocked." These calls are not received by parties that have enabled an anonymous call rejection feature on their phones.

If your phone is set up to block private numbers, all calls from Circuit Court clerk's offices will now be blocked. Many Superior Court numbers are already private, and by Jan. 1, all will be private. If your phone is set up to block private numbers, and you need to receive calls from the courts, you will need to deactivate the blocking feature or provide a number to the courts that will accept calls from private numbers.

For Fairpoint landlines (Centrex Plus business service), press *87 to deactivate anonymous call rejection. For other carriers, please contact your service provider for instructions on deactivation.

Test Drivers Wanted - Online Library Options
The Bar Association is seeking input on providers of its online legal library member benefit. Several events will be held Sept. 24-26 and on Oct. 1-3 featuring live demos and discussion with representatives from Casemaker and a similar service, Fastcase.

The Solo & Small Firm Networking Group holds a Casemaker demo on Sept. 25 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Events also are planned in Nashua, Portsmouth, Laconia and Newport. Details in a special e-Bulletin on Thursday.

Interested in learning more? Contact Lisha Brosseau for details on how to obtain a temporary Fastcase log-in. For more about Casemaker, look to the top banner on the Casemaker home page for "Videos" "Help" and "Webinar" for training resources.

NHMCLE Notifications Sent
Did you receive a pink form from NHMCLE? If so, check out this handy flow chart for information about compliance. This page is also accessible via the NHMCLE page at www.nhbar.org. If you received a white form, and everything looks accurate, no action is required.

Please note: Courses taken after June 30 cannot be viewed in your NHMCLE 2013 online record at this time. They will show up in your 2014 record and will be used as "carry back" credits.

US District Court: Magistrate Reappointment
The current term of Chief Deputy Clerk/United States Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Lynch of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire expires Jan. 14, 2014. The Court is required by law to establish a panel to consider the reappointment of the magistrate judge to a new four-year term.

Members of the bar and the public are invited to comment on whether Daniel J. Lynch should be recommended for reappointment to the court as a combined Chief Deputy Clerk/Magistrate Judge. Red Mass & Dinner - 10/15
Bishop Peter A. Libasci, the tenth Bishop of Manchester, will celebrate the 2013 Red Mass at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Saint Joseph Cathedral in Manchester.

Each year, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Manchester invites women and men in the law, law enforcement and the courts in New Hampshire to this event. After the Red Mass, the Catholic Lawyers Guild of New Hampshire will hold its annual dinner at Fratello's Italian Grille, 155 Dow St., in Manchester.

At the dinner, Martha E. O'Neill of Nashua will be honored with the Guild's St. Thomas More Award. Tickets to the dinner are $30. RSVP by Sept 30 to Beth Squeglia, Diocese of Manchester, PO Box 310, Manchester, NH 03105 or visit www.catholicnh.org/RedMass.

Constitution Day Resources - 9/17
Do you have kids in school, or know a teacher? Tell them about Constitution Day Essay Contest, held annually in NH. (Constitution Day, did you know, is Sept.17?)

This year's essay question, for students, is: "What are the arguments for and against restricting Constitutional rights to protect our security? In your opinion, should we have to give up some liberty, particularly personal privacy, in order to make our schools, airports and streets safer? Or are these restrictions intolerable in our free society?"

Find out more from our Constitution Day page about the contest and other resources.
