NHBA Award Winners Announced
US District Court Clerk Jim Starr is the 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Service to the Profession Award.
Attorney Tom Watson of Drummond Woodsum & MacMahon in Portsmouth is the winner of the 2013 E. Donald Dufresne Award for Outstanding Professionalism.
Retired Judge Harold Perkins is the 2013 recipient of the Justice William A. Grimes Award for Judicial Professionalism.
Judge Gillian L. Abramson has been selected as the 2013 winner of the Philip S. Hollman Equality Award.

Nuts & Bolts of Criminal Law - 5/22

Project Citizen Needs Volunteers - 5/24
The NHBA Law Related Education Program sponsors a public policy portfolio showcase for middle school students. This year the showcase will include work from elementary, middle and high school students.
The Project Citizen State Showcase and Hearings will be held at the Legislative Office Building in Concord on Friday, May 24. Project Citizen needs volunteers to evaluate student portfolios and judge oral presentations by the students. Only a few hours are required.

Court Seeks Amicus Briefs
The NH Supreme Court seeks amicus briefs or memoranda in Lucien Vincent v. Davina MacLean, on the issue of whether the plaintiff, an inmate at NH State Prison, was denied his due process rights when the court ordered that he participate in a small claims trial by phone, rather than in-person.
Amicus submissions answering the question in the affirmative are due June 3. Those answering in the negative are due by July 15. Send an original and 10 copies of the submission to Office of the Clerk, NH Supreme Court, One Charles Doe Drive, Concord, NH 03301. Read the court announcement.

Roadmap to a Tax Controversy - 5/23
A half-day CLE program on Thursday, May 23, that is sponsored by the NH Bar Low-Income Taxpayer Project will provide an overview of IRS-involved income-tax cases. The program is open to attorneys who have taken an LITP case in the past or who are willing to take on at least one in the next year. The program includes facilitated replays of training videos created by the IRS and is approved for 4.0 NHMCLE credits. Register online.

We have unintentionally observed the 10th anniversary of the demise of the NH landmark, the Old Man of the Mountain, by somehow omitting the Old Man profile from the front page. Something happened in the production of the May 17 issue that resulted in the TEMPORARY deletion of the Old Man's profile from the print edition.
Never fear - the familiar, craggy profile, which also appears in the NH Bar Association logo, will return in the June 21 issue of Bar News.

Public Hearing on Rule Changes - 6/7
The NH Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Rules will hold a public hearing at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 7, to collect input on court rules changes it is considering.
The changes concern: Notice of appeal deadline; photographing, recording and broadcasting; continuing judicial education; rule-making procedures; protocol for in camera review of documents; alternative dispute resolution; circuit court rules - dismissal of cases pending without action; counsel fees and guardians ad litem fees rules; performance evaluation of judges; sentence review division rules; and pro hac vice fees.

Child Support Guidelines Revised
The NH Division for Child Support Services has released the annual revision of the state's child support guidelines. 2013 NH Child Support Guidelines.
NHBA·CLE is planning a program on upcoming changes to child support guidelines, including statutory changes, from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12. Register for the live, in-person program or the live webcast.

Grafton County Bar Association Spring Meeting - 5/30
The spring meeting of the Grafton County Bar Association will feature journalist and historian Mike Pride, who will talk about his new book, Our War: Days and Events in the Fight for the Union, which recounts true stories from the Civil War.
