The Justice Gap in NH - 2/21
The NH Access to Justice Commission will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Legislative Office Building in Concord to discuss the findings of two recent studies regarding access to civil legal services for the poor and vulnerable in New Hampshire. The studies - a legal needs assessment and an economic impact analysis - were funded by the NH Bar Foundation and the American Bar Association. Read more about the legal needs study. Both studies will be available at www.nhbar.org on Thursday.

Federal Court Hiring Chief Deputy Clerk
The US District Court has an immediate opening for a full-time permanent chief deputy clerk (operations manager until Jan. 10, 2014). Jim Starr, the current clerk of court, retires Jan. 10, 2014, and will be succeeded by Dan Lynch, the current chief deputy clerk. As a result, the position to be filled will begin as operations manager and transition to chief deputy clerk upon Clerk Starr's retirement.

Facilitated Replays of PAD Rules CLE - 2/20, 2/21, 2/22
Video replays of the PAD Rules CLE are scheduled around the state, and there is still time to register.

TODAY: West Lebanon, at the Fireside Inn & Suites, on Feb. 20
THURSDAY: Lincoln, at the Mountain Club on Loon, on Feb. 21.
FRIDAY: Keene, at the Best Western Hotel, on Feb. 22.

The temporary Proportional Discovery/Automatic Disclosure (PAD) Rules go into effect in all superior courts March 1.

BOG Nomination Petitions - 3/1
Petitions for nominations to the NHBA Board of Governors will be accepted no later than March 1, 2013. Positions for which nominations are open:
  • Vice President
  • Governor at Large (one vacancy, three-year term)
  • County governors (two-year terms) representing:
    - Cheshire
    - Coos
    - Grafton
    - Merrimack
    - Rockingham
Balloting will take place from April 1 to until the close of business on April 15, 2013. Balloting is conducted online. Those eligible to vote are active-status members (dues fully paid). No fewer than 10 signatures are required for a nomination petition for a governor representing a county; no fewer than 25 signatures are required for an officer, governor at large or public sector governor. Bar members may sign only one petition for a county position on the Board representing the county where the signer's principal office is located.

Rockingham County Bar Event - 3/20
FREE for new lawyers admitted to practice in the last three years! The Rockingham County Bar Association is holding its Spring Social Event from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, at the Thirsty Moose Tap House (downstairs) at 21 Congress St. in Portsmouth. Cash bar. Heavy appetizers will be served. $10 for members. $15 for nonmembers.

Foreclosure Training - 3/20
The NH Bar Association Foreclosure Relief Project is hosting its first seminar where attorneys can learn the legal essentials for representing NH homeowners facing foreclosure.

March 20 is the date for the full-day CLE program at the Bar Center. (The training is only open to attorneys agreeing to participate in representing homeowners.) NH Attorney General Michael Delaney and US District Court Judge Joseph Laplante will be the guest speakers.

Storm Ahead? Is My Bar Meeting On?
In the event of inclement weather, closings or delayed openings at the Bar Center will be communicated via the Bar's website and on our voicemail greeting at the Bar Center.

If the Bar Center is experiencing a delayed opening, we will be open as soon as is reasonably possible for staff to safely get in to the office. If you are in doubt about the status of any meeting, please call the Bar Center at 603-715-3279 (EASY) before you head out.

Courts' Inclement Weather Policy
It is the policy of the New Hampshire Judicial Branch to provide access to justice despite inclement weather. Clerks and Registers will make every reasonable effort to ensure that staff are available to answer the telephone, respond to inquiries at the public counter, and accept filings, whatever the weather.
