Naturopathy is a method of integrative medicine based on the healing powers of nature.
It is a holistic system - meaning that the body, mind and spirit/emotions of the individual are taken into account in order to return a healthy balance back to the individual (homeostasis). Unlike conventional medicine, naturopathy doesn't look at the disease as much as the whole individual.
Naturopathic doctors adapt various healing modalities to the needs of individuals, using methods that are effective, natural and, when properly administered, safe for both chronic and acute conditions.
Insight's own naturopathic doctor, Salvatore DiLiello, focuses on the preventive care and wellness of you, the individual. Sal's goal to educate and empower you to make better, healthier decisions ultimately allows you to achieve your optimized state of health. Natural modalities may be utilized to help in this process including, but not limited to, nutritional counseling, homeopathy, relaxation techniques and herbal remedies.
Hippocrates (460-377 BC) is probably one of the earliest nature cure physicians who taught us that the body has an innate ability to heal itself and was credited with saying "nature is healer of all diseases."

Easy to Make and Good to Eat Healthy Recipes from the Director
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year! Here is to your health and vitality! I will drink (a green smoothie) to that! Below are great ideas for you to be creative and have fun making terrific smoothies. I enjoy making smoothies and personally prefer all green vegetables with salt and pepper, but I know many out there need a fruit or sweetener.
Read on for tips on making healthy smoothies fun for kids.

POWER SMOOTHIES
Make one for the kids, and one for YOU! I am most amazed when I make smoothies with a group of children for a "You are What YOU Eat" cooking lesson. I see how adventurous kids are when in a group. It's the positive side of peer pressure, but what to do when you are at home and there are no other kids around? Try these:
3 Tips for making smoothies fun for kids:
1.) Let the kids smell, feel and taste some options and then decide what to put in. For example, taste 2 or 3 types of apples; taste 2 or 3 different stages of ripeness for an avocado; or smell 2 or 3 different lemons and ask which one smells best. Try blending with chocolate almond milk. It hides the green and adds chocolate flavor, protein and calcium.
2.) Let the kids turn the machine on and off. What kid doesn't love pushing buttons?
3.) If they are green phobic, use raw spinach (not much taste). Ask them to try one leaf. If they won't allow the spinach, make their smoothie with their choices and let them taste one spoonful. Then ask if they want to put just one leaf of spinach in. (They may end up putting more). When they see that it did not change the taste, they will be more open next time.
I bet that you will be surprised how many things they will try in their smoothies with these simple strategies and a good scoop of adventurous spirit from you!
Have fun!
Blessings and Good Health, Michelle Martin, Ed.S. School Psychologist Director, Insight Learning & Wellness Center

A New Approach for Addiction Treatment: Astara Holistic Addiction Recovery Program
Addiction is neither a moral issue nor an indication of weakness, lack of will-power or even a disease. It is instead a symptom of larger and deeper unaddressed issues.
Based at Insight Learning & Wellness Center, the Astara approach for treating addiction with an individualized, yet holistic team approach, has been very successful in not only helping people free themselves from addiction, but also helps them move on to actualize their dreams and goals for the future. It is so gratifying to see the way our amazing clients use the program to free themselves from the prison of addiction.
In Astara's five years of helping people battle addiction, we have learned that our newer, alternative approaches are working much better in treating addictions than the older, standard paradigm.
Usually, traditional outpatient models only include group work and typically focus on keeping the addiction in check through the twelve steps. Astara, on the other hand, offers an individualized program - designed collaboratively with the client - and is dependent on the level and type of addiction.
Having an expert, compassionate team of professionals to treat the whole person, not just the addiction, has been a primary reason for our clients' success. Astara's holistic treatment offers a blend of cutting-edge individual and group counseling, which can also include family and partners. Twelve-step programs are still encouraged as a treatment option, but not as the only way, since our findings indicate that different approaches work for different people.
Marilyn Wise, LICDC conducts the crucial motivational interviewing, in which the client is met with respect, patience and empowerment and delivers hope, support, skills and encouragement. "We do not require abstinence to treat people and find that, for many, recovery is a gradual process of readiness, which we support," says Wise.
