9:30am Why Does Anyone Believe - Anything?
Ghosts, gods, conspiracies, and politics. A new book, The Believing Brain, by Michael Shermer, founder of Skeptic magazine, explains why human brains are "hard wired" to believe. Beliefs are what the brain makes. Beliefs are based on finding patterns-even where none exist-and giving those patterns meaning, intention, and agency-evil spirit, benevolent being, or conspirator. Neuroscience and cognitive research show how we first form beliefs and then look for reasons to support them. Fortunately, science provides tools to separate real from imaginary agents. Lois Edwards will provide an overview of this exciting book and lead a discussion. Come whether or not you've started reading it. (Available at Hennepin Library, also paperback and e-book.)
10:30am Spirituality for the Skeptic
Speaker: Rev. Dr. Pam Allen-Thompson.
