Today on the walk, Clark commented that everything was peaceful. What he meant by that was the weather was mild and peaceful and that the birds were quiet and peaceful. Such is the usual experience of September bird watching. You have to work for your birds in September, but the weather can be spectacular.

Bird of the Day
When we arrived at Baseline Reservoir, an osprey was sitting in the water just off the

shoreline. We disturbed it as we parked and got out of our cars. The osprey was not going to be chased off by us, however, because it had caught a giant carp and was not about to abandon it. It made several attempts to fly off with the fish, but it was just too heavy. It dragged it up on shore, but it was still too unwieldly to get into the air. It became apparent that our presence was not helping the osprey enjoy its fish dinner so we loaded up and left the osprey to dine in peace.
