"Is this a nice day, or what?!", exclaimed Jane on the walk this morning. We were all in agreement because the birds were active and the weather was spectacular. So many hummingbirds and hummingbird fights and chases this morning. They were everywhere, the only drawback being they wouldn't sit still.

The name given to this hummingbird, calliope, has always been questioned. It doesn't make any sense that one of the quietest hummingbirds is named after something so loud. Calliope hummingbirds are the smallest regularly occurring bird in North America. As far as hummingbirds go, they are rather shy and unassuming. Pete Dunne describes them as dumpy because of their no-neck, hunched posture. One diagnostic field mark is their spade-shaped central tail feathers which you can kind of see in my fuzzy slide show image.
