Saturday Bird Walk − Bird Count − July 9, 2016
Sunny and warm. 80°F. 2-10 mph. 10 participants

Gregory Canyon was full of flying things like butterflies and dragonflies, and yes, some birds too. The other thing that Gregory Canyon is full of is poison ivy so hikers beware.

Bird of the Day
Red-Tailed Hawk - Buteo jamaicensis

Our Bird of the Day put on a fun, but distant show by carrying a snake around from perch to perch on the ridge near the mouth of Gregory Canyon. It may have been waiting for newly fledged young to come and get the snake or it might have been looking for a good place to eat a little snake before delivering the rest to the nest? It seemed restless. I have been seeing many red-tails with snakes this year - must be a good (bad) year for snakes?
