We had many neat experiences today including seeing some just-about-to-fledge great horned owls, close views of yellow-headed blackbirds, and multiple encounters with great blue herons. We visited many locations and our species total got way up there. You gotta love spring!

     Bonaparte's Gull

Chroicocephalus philadelphia

I was in quite a conundrum this week as to which bird to pick for Bird of the Day. In the end, I went with the rarest bird of the day which was a Bonaparte's Gull. This gull is named after
Bonaparte's Gulls ©Steve Frye

Charles Bonaparte, a French ornithologist, and nephew to Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The similar looking Franklin's Gull is more common here, but you can distinguish the two by the Bonaparte's smaller eye arcs, thinner all-black bill, and its darker primary feathers compared to the Franklin's.
