We're Wild About Birds!

Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - April 9, 2016
Sunny and mild. 55°F. 2-6 mph. 20 participants.

Spring Peepers! Actually, they were western chorus frogs that we heard which many former easterners identify as spring peepers. Anyway, it was great to hear them today. I always report on the frogs when we first hear them. Such a great and nostalgic sound of spring for me.

Sayornis nigricans

A black phoebe is a rare occurrence in Boulder County, but for the past three years this

phoebe has shown up at the 75
th Street Bridge hoping to find a mate. It was singing so loudly this morning it was the first thing I heard when I opened the car door in the parking lot. Another interesting bird trend has been the recent increase in eastern phoebes. The black phoebe may choose to mate with an eastern phoebe which has been known to occur if it cannot find another black phoebe. Only time will tell and there are plenty of bird watchers looking at this black phoebe.
