Cloudy, breezy and cold with light snow. 25°F. 3-10 mph. 6 participants.

The return of winter this week kept our participation down, but the birds were great. Bird watching in all different kinds of weather lets you see all kinds of behaviors.

Bird of the Day: Western

We found the western bluebirds in the woods near the owl nest. Not a typical spot for finding

them in migration, but I think the cold and breeze pushed them to seek cover just like it did with us. Even with our cloudy conditions, the blue of the bluebirds still lit up the scene. Western bluebirds have a much deeper blue than mountain or eastern bluebirds. I sometimes think it looks almost purple.
