Great Horned Owl with Great Blue Herons İSteve Frye
We outdid ourselves this morning in terms of birding locations. Usually, even when we bird bycar like this morning, we don't travel to so many locations. Our ambitious schedule did deliver some great sightings; from the golden eagle on top of Rabbit Mountain, ducks on Boat Pond, a group of great-tailed grackles, and the Great Horned Owl nesting amongst the Great Blue Herons.

Bird of the Day:
Great Blue Heron -
Ardea Herodias

Great Blue Heron nest colonies, or heronries, are beginning to be populated. The colony we visited on Crane Hallow Rd was about half full. Even without all the residents, the herons that

were there were nest building and exhibiting courtship behaviors. It's a very active place and it will only increase over the next few months. One curiosity within the colony is the nesting great horned owls. It might seem unusual to have such a predator among the herons, but it is not that strange. Great horns start nesting well before the herons return. When the herons do return to find the owl in their midst, it seems that everyone agrees not to mess with each other. The peace is maintained.
