Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - March 5, 2016
Partly cloudy and mild. 50°F. 2-4 mph. 17 participants.
Today we saw a marked increase in songbirds. Robins, who have been scarce, were at several locations. We saw an impressive number of towhees for early March. See the slide show for Jack Klase's image of a spotted towhee fight. Our search for bluebirds came up blank, but hopefully, you will come across some soon!

We saw both a male and a female Cooper's Hawk this morning. They were perched not too far

from each other and the assumption is they are nesting near Flatirons Golf Course and Centennial Trail. Both sexes in Cooper's Hawks are similarly patterned and colored, but you can tell them apart because the female is about 50% larger than the male. Telling size differences in the field is fraught with pitfalls, but when you have both birds together it's rather easy. The technical term for the female being larger than the male is reverse sexual dimorphism.
