Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Feb 27, 2016
Sunny and hot. 50-60°F. 2-5 mph. 14 participants.

Roasty-toasty for late in February. The water has all opened up and the waterfowl are coming in. Even some songbirds are returning including mountain bluebirds and a few tree swallows!

Bird of the Day:
Green-Winged Teal - Anas crecca

Green-Winged Teal İKevin Rutherford

Many waterfowl species engage in courtship behavior throughout the winter, but at this point in the year, they are getting more serious. We found a group of male green-winged teal surrounding a female, trying to impress her. The males swam around the female occasionally lifting their tails high and giving a sharp chirping call. The displays increased until the males started actual combat. See the slide show and video for great green-wing images and more.
