Office Serenity by Steve Frye
I shy away from giving gifts from my store. It's not that I don't love the things I sell, I do, but it seems too easy or perhaps, pushy of me to give someone something off the shelf of the store I own. So I was a bit apprehensive when I thought of giving my wife a window bird feeder for her office this past Christmas. I knew she liked to watch the birds on our feeders at home, of course, but still I was a bit nervous about this gift. Thankfully, she opened it and was excited about having the birds come to her office window, if they would? read more . . . .

A Surprising Gift . . . that Keeps
on Giving by Julie Graf Frye
One of the items on my Christmas "wish list" this year, in addition to world peace, was a bird feeder for my office. I thought it might bring a bit of biological interest as well as joy to my office, but never did I dream just how much it seems to be contributing to my own inner peace. My job can sometimes be quite stressful, with days filled both with planning for the future and learning from past efforts. What I realize the bird feeder does for me each day is remind me to focus on the present moment, including being mindful of the immediate task at hand. read more . . . .

Listed and Imperiled Species
by County
The link below shows a map produced by NatureServe which provides plant and animal species of concern by county across the nation. It is a fascinating, if not scary, map. Hopefully, this kind of tool will be helpful to planners and activists across the country. NatureServe: Listing & Imperiled Species by County

Mesmerizing Migration Gap
The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology has produced a fascinating animated migration map of 118 different species using eBird data. If you do not use eBird for tracking your bird observations, please consider switching. It will keep track of your records and it provides valuable information to other birders and researchers. My personal records and all of the Wild Bird Company walks are logged on eBird.

Ask Steve
Q: Why is seed feeding so slow and suet feeding so heavy this winter?
A: We get these kind of intriguing questions all the time at the store. Without extensive scientific work we could never answer definitively, but I do have some ideas about these feeding observations.
Bird feeding at my house, both seed and suet, has been great this winter and we have heard from a number of customers about great activity recently. So what could account read more . . .
