Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Jan 23, 2016
Partly cloudy and mild. 30°F. 2-6 mph. 17 participants.

We were just leaving the trails this morning as the mud began to thaw. Great timing. A few weeks ago (in the slide show) we took images of mink prints in the snow. Today we got a brief glimpse of that mink where we had seen the previous tracks near the 75th Street Bridge over Boulder Creek (see slide show)

Bird of the Day:
American Kestrel - Falco sparverius

American Kestrels are always a show stopper on the bird walks. If you ever get a good look at a male kestrel, you will know why (see slide show). The black markings and spots combined with the copper and French blue tones are mesmerizing. One of the birds we saw this morning had just caught a mouse/vole. In the slide show I have sparred the more gruesome images of his meal. Kestrels eat mostly insects, mice and voles, and a few small birds.
