Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Dec 26, 2015
Partly Cloudy and chilly. 15°F. 2-6 mph. 4 participants.

On our last bird walk for 2015, it was cold, but it didn't seem too harsh because the breeze held off for most of our time. The creek path was strangely lacking songbirds. I'm not sure if this was due to the weather, the merlin, our timing, or just bad luck. Happy New Year everyone and good birding!

Bird of the Day: Hooded Merganser − Lophodytes cucullatus
Hooded Mergansers İSteve Frye

The hooded mergansers were out in force this morning. It's nice to see them on the creek because it made them a little more approachable compared to normal. As you will see from the slide show, there was a hooded merganser in the bunch that was either a bird with an abhorrent plumage or some kind of hybrid. Its head shape was a little different, but it had many hooded characteristics. One of the intriguing things about bird watching is that answers are not always easily (or ever) attained!
