Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Dec 12, 2015
Snowing and cold. 20°F. 2-6 mph. 6 participants.

Our first location this morning was an attempt to find the quintessential holiday greeting card scene. A male cardinal in the snow! There has been a single male cardinal hanging out near Hawthorn Gulch for about three years now. We missed on the cardinal, but we had quite an adventure in the snow today.

Bird of the Day: Northern Pintail − Anas acuta

If you look at the slide show from today, you'll see that my one image of the pintail was not taken in optimal photographic conditions. But those were the conditions we had. Even with the poor conditions, I always get excited when I see a northern pintail because we see them only in small numbers, their population is in decline, and because they are so elegant.
