Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Dec 5, 2015
Partly cloudy and mild. 40°F. 2-4 mph. 12 participants.

Life gets tough on a bird watcher when the ice starts covering the lakes and ponds. Not necessarily because of the cold conditions, but because many of the birds leave or they are all out in the middle of the lake far away. It reduces those intimate moments you have with close up birds. We ended well this morning, not seeing our Bird of the Day until the last moment. Also included in today's slide show are a few images from Wildlife Tree Day.

Bird of the Day:  Tundra Swan − Cygnus columbianus

onthe ice quite clearly with our naked eyes. The only real possibilities were pelican or swan. A quick look through the binoculars showed that it was a swan. After studying its bill for a while we determined it was a tundra and not the rarer trumpeter. The black eye of a trumpeter seems to be incorporated into the black bill, whereas a tudra's black eye is set back from the bill and only connected by a small extension of its black bill. (Take a look at the field guides or the web sites below to see what I mean)
