Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Oct 31, 2015
|
Sunny and breezy. 40-55°F. 3-15 mph. 10 participants.
This morning's Halloween Tour of Cemeteries was led by John James Audubon. We convinc ed him not to shoot any of the birds, but instead use binoculars. We had a delightful morning with good weather, but the cemeteries were a little dead (bird wise). View Photo Gallery View Slide Show

Bird of the Day: Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus

Is there a better Bird of the Day on Halloween than a great horned owl? I warned everyone that the owl at Ryssby was very shy, but after we quickly found it (thanks Alison), it was quite cooperative. While other birds are getting ready for winter and enduring until spring, great horned owls are starting to establish territory, pairing off, and getting ready to nest. Look for their large cat-like silhouettes in the trees at dusk.
