We're Wild About Birds!
1.844.442.1322
Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Oct 24, 2015
Sunny with fog early. 35-55°F. 0-4 mph. 13 participants.

It was so exciting to see frost on the ground this morning! It was long overdue and the trees (and people) need it to get a clue about winter approaching. Still some good color out there.

Note: When we arrived at Cottonwood Marsh in Walden Ponds Open Space, there was someone there flying a drone. Specifically, he was flying it out over the marsh to scare up the birds so his photographer friend could get some good flight pictures. Let the Open Space folks know that drones that disturb wildlife should be confiscated and the pilots ticketed.

Bird of the Day: Glossy/White-Faced Ibis,
Plegadis species
Glossy/White-Faced Ibis
İEileen Rutherford

This ibis had been spotted earlier in the week and reported by many as a glossy ibis. When we saw it this morning, it displayed characteristics of both glossy and white-faced ibis. We called it a glossy mostly based on the eye color and skin color around the eye. However, this afternoon Tony Leukering writing on COBirds addressed this identification problem concerning juvenile ibis like the one we saw. The gist of his article was that it is essentially impossible to distinguish young glossy and white-faced ibis from each other. Characteristics that distinguish adults like eye color are not reliable as juveniles. So, I guess we need to more accurately identify the ibis we saw this morning as a glossy/white-faced ibis for now.
