We're Wild About Birds!

Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Oct 17, 2015
Sunny and pleasant. 60°F. 2-5 mph. 11 participants.
Despite the chill in the air and the smell of fallen leaves, summer is hanging on as strongly as it
can. The bullfrogs were all out sunny themselves and we still had dragonflies and butterflies sailing around us this morning.

Bird of the Day: White-Crowned Sparrow,
Zonotrichia leucophrys

The white-crowned sparrows are coming through right now. Some have only travelled from alpine habitat in Boulder County, however, others are coming from as far away as Alaska. The birds in the slide show have pale supralorals and gray chests and flanks which means they are the subspecies from the Pacific Northwest including Alaska and British Columbia. The lores of a bird are located between the eye and the beak and the supraloral area is located just above that, between the lores and the eyebrow in other words. Birds that nest in the alpine of Boulder County have dark supralorals.
